Lockdown for October half term

Bellamybells · 17/09/2020 18:58

I heard on my local radio station that worst case scenario this may be considered so that kids don't miss school. Has anyone heard much more about this idea?

Better than nothing. Really not looking forward to the mess that's coming. Sad

Fingers crossed people stick to the rule of 5 or at least bloody limit their numbers again!

Also I can't find a source so wasn't sure if just hearsay?

I don't think we will get to October without a lockdown. The Tories are hoping we will get to October like they waited for lockdown for Easter to save money

UnaMujer · 17/09/2020 19:25

What radio station??

tigger1001 · 17/09/2020 19:30

Is the holiday in October not at slightly different times for different areas? It is where I am

Wannabangbang · 17/09/2020 19:31

Which station? The tories have handled this so badly, it's a car crash waiting to happen on an epic scale. But the media also don't help matters by spinning half truths and scaremongering people.

They said might be two weeks to cover

How would that work? Businesses closed?

Would be a nightmare to fund

Lower socialisation maybe but hard to enforce

Radio Berkshire but I can't see if anywhere online!

I've always been planning for:
A) either the government's plan for schools magically works (ah! I did wish for it!)
B) or we get another lockdown by half term (and if so, I don’t believe for a second it would last only 2 weeks)

woodlands01 · 17/09/2020 20:32

I'm an avid Radio Berkshire listener & haven't heard this. No secondary school sent year groups home yet as far as I know.

bigchris · 17/09/2020 20:33

Tbh unless you've got a link its all hearsay ,more hearsay and rumours and scare mongering , i've watched the 6 o clock news and channel 4 news tonight and no mention

Grobagsforever · 17/09/2020 20:35

There isn't going to be another lockdown as the numpties in charge have FINALLY worked out that protecting the grey vote isn't worth ruining everyone else's lives over

Southernsoftie76 · 17/09/2020 20:38

Half term is a month away, by then the country will be overwhelmed with Covid cases if things continue as they are. What a god awful mess this is. I can’t see my child’s school staying open for another month.

Worriedmum999 · 17/09/2020 20:39

If we did a lockdown down for 2/3 weeks it would probably be enough to get cases down to a level that track and trace and testing could cope with again as it would give the new labs time to open and catch up with the backlog.

If we wait until October half term there will be as many infections if not more than before the first lockdown and look how long that one had to be.

Sadly, the government can’t make good, quick decisions for a better long term outcome. They like to wait until everything has fallen apart and 1000 people a day are dying.

Worriedmum999 · 17/09/2020 20:39

Sorry...typo... ‘if we did a lockdown NOW’

tigger1001 · 17/09/2020 20:44

Yes it might be two weeks but our local holidays are two weeks and are different dates to the next local authority so lockdown to cover the school holidays here would need to be at least 3 weeks and would then cover non holiday time

Areyousureted · 17/09/2020 20:47

It all feels like such a mess and not sure what the best solution is

Tfoot75 · 17/09/2020 20:49

Lockdown is a very blunt tool and its only effective once. We've already tried that, I doubt we'll be going there again in a hurry unless absolutely nothing else is effective.

Potential measures are

-no households mixing
-curfews
-hospitality sector closures (with industry specific furlough)
-half lockdown - but with all work and school to continue (unless your industry is prevented from operating)

The only reason why a lockdown (ie, don't leave your home except for exercise) would happen is if the health service is actually close to being overwhelmed. Surely its pretty unlikely that that will happen when we've had 6/8 months to prepare and have effective treatments etc? I don't think that the health service will be overwhelmed by October - if its going to happen it would be december/January.

middleager · 17/09/2020 20:50

We're on local lockdown in Birmingham with more than 50 schools with (sometimes multiple) cases. I doubt we'll make October, let alone half term, before our schools are running on empty.

There are some parts of the country where this isn't the case, where there are minimal cases and no schools impacted. There's such disparity, how can one size fit all?

middleager · 17/09/2020 20:54

My one child's secondary managed 7 days before he was sent back due to a case. The third in school. My other son's school reported its first case after 2 days, now there are several after 2 weeks. Never mind, they're only in GCSE years...
Qasd · 17/09/2020 21:01

Lockdowns do not work for a week even New Zealand did seven! I would say if they shut at half term schools will not go back this academic year! But hey we’ll be got more than a lot of mumsnetters thought he should get so I will take six weeks over nothing! Learning to set expectations low here😂!

Mippi · 17/09/2020 21:02

There won't be a national lockdown, but the local lockdowns will spread and multiply...

cantkeepawayforever · 17/09/2020 21:02

I don't think there will be an official 'lockdown' at half term.

However, I fully expect that schools will be closed, or at least, we will be on de facto Tier 3 - secondaries closed, primaries open in theory but closed due to lack of staff in practice - in the majority of the country by half term.

That will of itself create lockdown-like conditions because younger children being at home will mean that more parents wfh.

cantkeepawayforever · 17/09/2020 21:04

But hey we’ll be got more than a lot of mumsnetters thought he should get so I will take six weeks over nothing!

Yes, I am absolutely busting a gut with my class at the moment, on the assumption that this next few weeks is - if we make it through even those weeks - their main in person educational input this academic year.

middleager · 17/09/2020 21:10

And those of us with kids in GCSE years who got just 7 days and now a mixed bag of home learning, what do we do? I'd give anything for weeks, but it's rife in our city schools and so many not getting an education.
