Does anyone not use hand sanitiser?

I suffer with rhinitis on-and-off and I remember a few years ago I thought it was made worse whenever I used a hand sanitiser, so I avoided it. Since Covid I've used sanitiser almost everyday and I've realised that I've had quite bad rhinitis recently. I'd like to try and stay away from it again for a while to see if that helps but worried for obvious reasons. Is anyone else just focusing on not touching their face and washing their hands regularly rather than using sanitiser?

I go out of average once a week at the moment and wear a mask throughout so no, I use it about once a week when I walk into whatever place I’m going that week. I would use it if asked. I much prefer soap and water.

awesomeaircraft · 17/09/2020 20:35

I almost never use it. I focus on not touching my face and wash my hands. Seems to have worked thus far.

Only used it when travelling by plane and in the shops when you have to do it on entering/leaving.

PinkBuffalo · 17/09/2020 20:39

I do not use hand sanitiser
I wash my hands after using the loo, before eating and on getting in after being out

ProperlyPdOff · 17/09/2020 20:41

@OpheliasCrayon I am the same (cracked and bleeding hands, so painful), but I use the non-alcohol foam, which is better than the alcohol ones. I also use special soap at home and almost all normal handwashes break the skin on my hands. I am not judging people - just letting them know there are alternatives! The soap flakes idea suggested above might work for some. I also agree with others that hand-washing is best, but there is still a need for some hygiene measures while out and about IMHO.

MadCattery · 17/09/2020 21:03

As seldom as possible. Soap and running water recently.

MadCattery · 17/09/2020 21:26

I typed in soap and water FREQUENTLY and it autocorrected to RECENTLY. I guess both apply!

Crinkledbeetroot · 17/09/2020 21:31

I don't use hand sanitiser or anti bacterial soap. I get severe dermatitis on my hands if I do. I work in a school and it's not been a problem. Depending on the situation I often wear gloves and then apply sanitiser to those.

JanewaysBun · 17/09/2020 21:46

I've got terrible dermatitis on my hands so can't use sanitised and only use soap when I've been outside coming in. The rest of the time just a quick splash of water /using gloves on babies' nappies. Haven't been unwell yet although think I may have been a carrier a few months ago

All the stuff you can buy messed my hands up however the soap flakes I ordered last night have arrived today so I will give them a whirl
@OpheliasCrayon sorry I got the name wrong - it's soap leaves Lifeventure Unisex's Soap Leaves x 50 Travel, White, Small [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0038PXRWM/ref=cm]]swwrcppapiii_u66yFbM97DKG7

Very effective. We carry a bottle of water, simply put a leaf on your hand, add some water and rub into a lather - it lathers up really nicely. When finished wash off with more water from the bottle and dry with a towel. Very effective.

DS uses prescription soap at home but his hands can handle using the soap leaves all day (if we are out) without any ill effect.
Bought them yesterday and they've arrived today. Am looking forward to trying them today. Also with my kids when out if we have picnics etc because frankly alcohol gel just before yoh eat food with your hands tastes horrible! Thanks for the recommend. Hopefully it works !

Antibacterial hand gel is pretty useless against viruses(clue is in the title antibacterial). Soap and water is much more effective with the soap destroying the fat based outer layer of the virus.

Intrigued by the soap based products mentioned here though. As to date I've been carrying around a normal small soap pump dispenser that had run out of soap that I then filled with water to create soapy water and which I rinsed off with my drinking water bottle which is effective but a bit messy.

Topsyandtimison37 · 18/09/2020 19:37

They are sanitising they kids hands left right and centre at the school my kids goes to. I worry as her hands are starting to look a tad sore.

JaceLancs · 18/09/2020 20:26

It gives me dermatitis I’m getting fed up with being forced to use it in some shops
I refused to enter a shop today as they wouldn’t let me apply myself so I could use as little as possible

These soap flakes look good!

I wont use it because for some reason my skin just never absorbs it. It sits on my hands and forms a greasy, slimy film. I'm autistic, and one of the things I find extremely distressing is having anything sticky or tacky on my skin.

Perfectly happy to wash my hands with soap and running water at every opportunity, but I'm not willing to use sanitiser every five minutes . Wearing a mask is something that I initially found uncomfortable, but it never distressed me to the degree that having sanitiser on my hands does, so I've gotten used to it to the point whereby I can wear one for long enough to get around a shop etc with no issue. Am I hell using hand sanitiser though.

ProperlyPdOff · 18/09/2020 21:49

Antibacterial hand gel is pretty useless against viruses(clue is in the title antibacterial I used to think that too, but then I understood that it is not the bacterial-killing properties that are important, it is the alcohol in the hand gel that breaks down the outside of the virus and kills it that way. So in that respect the title is a little misleading.
The non-alcohol products work differently and have different ingredients.

Remmy123 · 18/09/2020 22:14

I don't use hand santitiser as irritates my skin - just wash hands with anti bac where you can

katy1213 · 18/09/2020 22:17

There was none in the shops when I tried to buy it months ago; by the time it reappeared, I'd survived perfectly well without so I didn't bother. I've used it occasionally on railway stations/going into shops - but I'm happy with soap and water.

Nat6999 · 18/09/2020 23:53

Me, I've got peripheral neuropathy in my hands & sanitiser sends them in to crazy spasms, I struggle with soap & water if the water isn't hot enough.

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 19/09/2020 02:42

I don't. Hand washing only

Same at my dc school far more sanitising than actual washing although I accept its easier and quicker to squirt 30 hands than have them all queue up at the sinks
WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 19/09/2020 05:47

I don't use it much as I am prone to hand eczema, I don't go into shops much nowadays and buy online as you do seem to be forced into using it, with the winter coming my eczema does get worse with the cold weather.

squeekums · 19/09/2020 05:58

Nope, it stings my hands, flares eczema on back of hands. Soap and warm water is enough
Even in shops or whatever, dont use it

Aridane · 19/09/2020 06:11

Why would hand gel cause a runny nose ?

squeekums · 19/09/2020 06:19

Why would hand gel cause a runny nose
I'd assume allergies, like to the smell of it, like a hayfever runny nose maybe?
