I hate to ask this but I'm confused about DD and symptoms

I'm a sensible person. I'm well-read on Covid. I still feel a bit baffled on what to do...

DD (9) has a cold. I think. Classic runny nose, streaming eyes etc. She started with it on Monday night, it came on very suddenly.

Kept her off on Tuesday. She had a terrible night and was very feverish. So kept her off on Wednesday too. Since yesterday afternoon she's been complaining of stomach ache and headache off and on. She's not lost her appetite, though. She's very pale, still snotty. She's now had three days off, which is very unusual for her.

Her temperature is normal now but she's still snotty and tired. With the stomach ache and headache I started to think maybe we should think about a test. None available; was, at one point, offered a walk-in centre appointment which was 55 miles from here. We can't get there. No tests at all available now.

DH has started a new job TODAY so if we don't have to self isolate we really don't want to. It feels like a cold. She's not coughing, apart from the odd cough to clear her throat, really. But it's knocked her out more than a cold usually would and the stomach ache is a little concerning.

WWYD?

I'd keep her off for 10 days since symptoms started I guess. Would only be 3 more school days.

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 17/09/2020 12:10

I thought fever = symptom = test or in the absence of a test you all self isolate for 14 days?

KitchenConfidential · 17/09/2020 12:12

Fever is a classic symptom.

KitchenConfidential · 17/09/2020 12:13

She should stay at home and ideally get tested and everyone else in the household should also quarantine.

Lockdownseperation · 17/09/2020 12:45

As she has had a fever then you all need to self isolate for 14 days unless she gets a negative test result.

Lockdownseperation · 17/09/2020 12:46

@MarmiteCrumpet25 the person who has the fever has to isolate for 7 days and the household members for 14 days but obviously it’s a young child then they can’t go out by themself.

Settleandcalm · 17/09/2020 12:47

You absolutely have to self isolate, all of you, DH shouldn’t be going in to work, no shops nothing.

I’ve just been through this and it’s a PITA keeping all kids at home, got the negative results now it is a cold. But the rules say 1 bout of fever in any of you it’s self isolate and test.

everybodysang · 17/09/2020 12:48

You know, as I wrote it all down I thought "you idiot. If someone else said this you'd tell them to self isolate."

My brain is a bit scrambled from a few nights of really bad sleep with her - it's been like having a baby again!

Thank you all.

Ten days for the one with symptoms.

OP - if she had a fever then she needs a test and you should be isolating as a household.

Lockdownseperation · 17/09/2020 12:49

@everybodysang it’s sometimes difficult to see the wood for the trees when you are in the situation. I hope DD feels better soon and you are able to get her a speedy test.

palacegirl77 · 17/09/2020 12:50

Fever and other non-cold symptoms should definitely be having s test and you should all be isolating until results.

dementedpixie · 17/09/2020 12:50

@Lockdownseperation its 10 days now, not 7 days from the person with symptoms. Its 14 days for the rest of the family

It really does scramble your head doesn’t it! I did the same thing. Wrote a post wondering if I should get a test etc and then after I posted it and got told off, i reread it as if it was someone else’s and thought why did I even ask 😂
XiCi · 17/09/2020 12:54

I've just read an article from a professor leading the Covid symptom study that says if your child has a runny nose they do not have Covid and urging parents to separate cold and covid symptoms.

XiCi · 17/09/2020 12:55

I guess the fever complicates things though as rare with colds

Yes, I read the same comments from the professor - if it was just a runny nose I'd be sure but the fever/tummyache threw me.

He also said that for the majority of children their only symptom is fatigue. Sounds like she has a nasty cold. I guess with no testing and the fever though you cant take any chances

1WildTeaParty · 17/09/2020 13:02

-Just runny nose = Cold symptom - no action required.

-Fever (with or without runny nose) = symptom - so isolation for the household and a test to rule out covid ( if you really need to limit isolation ...and the test can be arranged).

-Other symptoms to treat like covid19 until proved not to be:
stomach issues
continuous cough
loss of taste or smell

Lockdownseperation · 17/09/2020 13:26

@dementedpixie thank you for that. I missed that update.
