Why are figures on Zoe app higher than the daily reported figures?

Just joined the Zoe app and it shows estimated no. of daily new cases to be around 6500. This is quite a bit higher than the daily reported cases yesterday 4000. How is the data collected and which is the more likely to be closest to accurate?

If you go onto the app and furtle around you'll find the bit where they tell you how their figures are derived and why they differ from other official sources.

It's estimating based on people recording symptoms.

Great thank you @Porcupineinwaiting

If i logged my symptoms into that app it would assume I had covid.

I don't.

grey can i ask how do you know that? Have they released their algorithms? If you've tested negative you need to manually enter it into the app (it's not always clear).

Op remember that daily reported cases are just that - positive confirmations.
An extremely high proportion of cases are asymptomatic and/or won't end up being tested for whatever reason.

It would assume you might have Covid and use data based on asking other users with similar symptoms to test, in order to estimate total numbers of actual cases.

@Greysparkles

If i logged my symptoms into that app it would assume I had covid.

I don't.

It wouldn’t assume anything. If you had the ‘top three’ symptoms it’d suggest you get a test and ask you to log the result. It might also ask you to get a test if you had symptoms, or a combination of symptoms, that they were interested in from a research perspective. The many months of research and built up knowledge is then used to estimate the actual rate of infection, which is likely to be significantly more accurate than the ‘confirmed’ cases, especially with the testing crisis at the moment.
