What type of cough for Covid?

DS has woken with a cough, he's has a cold about 10 days ago that cleared up and now this cough seems to be really productive and sounds pleghmy and cloggy in his throat if that makes sense? As far as I was aware the Covid cough was a dry cough?

It can be either. Dry is more common but you can’t rule out covid because of phlegm.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/09/2020 08:12

My DS's school has specified that if it's a wet phlegmy cough there's no need to isolate.

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2020 08:14

I’m not sure what information they’re going off @Waxonwaxoff0 but that’s certainly not the NHS position. That’s quite worrying.

This is an nhs page describing how to manage a wet covid cough.

@PurpleDaisies I'm not worried, I think they are using common sense to ensure that everyone doesn't have to isolate non stop. If it's a mucusy cough along with a blocked nose etc then it's obviously a common cold.

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2020 08:19

It’s worrying your school has decided they know better than the NHS.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/09/2020 08:24

Well there's nothing stopping other parents keeping their children off with a common cold if they wish. I can't afford to do that unfortunately so I'm glad of the school's stance on it.

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2020 08:25

You can’t tell if a new continuous cough is the common cold or not without a test.

The school’s stands is totally irresponsible.

AlexaShutUp · 17/09/2020 08:29

Agree with purpledaisies - school should follow the NHS guidelines and not invent their own rules. Shocking that they would do otherwise, and very worrying indeed.

OP, your ds is probably fine, but any new persistent cough should be treated as potential covid. Sorry, I know it's a pain. Sad

How many more of these posts are we going to get? 🙄

Symptoms in younger children vary wildly from those in adults.
Best ring 119 (that’s where 111 is directing to), they will only suggest a test if it’s necessary.

MumOfAToddler26 · 17/09/2020 08:35

Oh I'm sorry Crossstitchingnana ** I thought this was a forum where people asked a question and people answered? My bad 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks everyone I'm trying to get a test but it's proving to be very difficult 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
