When the death rate is so low why are people so desperate to get tested?

Why is everyone so stressed about covid when its hardly killing anyone anymore? Just over 700 deaths were attributed to it in the last 9 weeks. We'd expect 80,000+ deaths in this same period pre covid so it's a tiny percentage of people who are dying from this. I don't understand this panic or motivation to get tested. What am i missing?

Because some of us are at huge risk of dying !!

I have three kids and no partner in this country. I don't want to die. Because someone wants a normal life.

However my so.ution is that ALL of us who are clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) lock ourselves down ... I can WFH as can 300k or more leaving just the 295k to be supported whilst the rest live a normal life with the mild sniffles... much better economically than 7m...
