Schools - are you more worried or less concerned now

On the back of a recent thread asking how worried people were on a scale of 1-10, how worried are people now that they've been back a week or two? Are you more concerned or less concerned than you were just before kids went back? 1- not concerned at all, 10 - really worried.

@MarcelineMissouri

Worried about what? Actual risk of coronavirus - 1 Disruption to school over the next few months - 10
Agree totally. I think the potential yo-yoing in and out could be more disruptive to them than actual total closure. However mine will continue to go in as long as school will let them because, you know, I have to work
SaltySosha · 15/09/2020 20:57

I had an email from DS’s school today which says the government has told them to prepare for “1 week on one week off” school

Really? Are you in a lockdown area?

Frazzled2207 · 15/09/2020 21:03

@LadyCatStark
One school near me has been doing this anyway as they think they are 'too big for bubbles'. It's a sixth form college if that makes a difference. Half the class in at any one time (rotate weekly) and all classes are on zoom (or similar) so the rest of the kids are at home and participate normally.
Yes a pain to set up but actually will be far less disruptive if some of the kids unexpectedly off.

2 for virus, 10 for closures - which is mainly to do with the lack of adequate testing.

wasthataburp · 15/09/2020 21:24

About an 8 for children's disruption to education and them missing out

10 for collapse of the economy and the secondary effects

0 to actually getting Covid

Massive disruptions to every day life and its not justified

jerometheturnipking · 15/09/2020 21:26

1 for virus. 5 for closures - I’m studying online at the moment so can deal with class isolations. Just need them to be in and childcare to be open when I’m in placements. Kids have been in for 5 weeks so far - we had a cold after the first week that didn’t require quarantine but no illness since then. I trust our school are taking all the appropriate measures, and I know as a family we’re limiting our social activities to minimise risk elsewhere.

If the sorted out tests so Test and Protect could work properly I’d be less worried about kids needing to take time off.

Splendidseptember · 15/09/2020 21:33

8 worried about covid. The reality in schools is that we are rammed in like a sardines and can't escape it.

Worried about the economy 10.

Upset and angered by the back up testing to going back. 10.

OpheliasCrayon · 15/09/2020 21:35

0 no worries at all. I teach and have been sat next to a child with a steaming cold all day. It is what it is. Life needs to continue and kids need to be in school with their friends as normal.
Before I get flamed I'm vulnerable or whatever but I didn't want to shield so never have / won't

Good for you for living your life the way you want to!!

2, which is higher than it was.

  • yr12 DS is wandering around the city for hours inbetween lessons. He has nowhere to go.
  • yr8 DS says he's freezing at school in lessons because the windows are left open all the time. We are talking about what can he do to keep warm.
  • Uni age DC... will they actually stay in digs all year? How much will we pay for expensive digs but few proper lectures or lessons?

I'm a -10 on the risk of severe illness.

OpheliasCrayon · 15/09/2020 21:51

I feel that was sarcasm @wasthataburp

ZiggeryZaggy · 15/09/2020 21:53

Started at a 1 but have moved up to a 3. I was previously in shielding group but wasn’t too worried as our area had relatively few cases, but that has changed quite suddenly since the schools went back, as the number is increasing.

Passthecake30 · 15/09/2020 22:02

3 to catching it as I have (controlled) asthma. Both kids, primary and secondary, say they are not social distancing.

9 to disruption to school, ds was taught via teams last week and made me feel that he could keep up with the curriculum, however wfh without him underfoot has improved my productivity 500%!!

blue25 · 15/09/2020 22:03
  1. It’s all going very wrong here.

No it actually wasn't! Sorry. I totally agree with you
Concerned7777 · 15/09/2020 22:28

1 about their/mine health complications
10 about the disruption to their learning if they need to be regularly isolating

OpheliasCrayon · 16/09/2020 06:35

@wasthataburp oh sorry! Most people on here seem to think I'm hideously immoral for not sheilding and that I alone will overwhelm the nhs with my actions!

Not at all! I wish more people would think like you and stop being terrified by all the media propaganda

ifonly4 · 16/09/2020 08:44

Work in a school. Generally around an 8, definitely a 10 over weekend as found out I'll soon be having close contact with up to 200. Back at an 8 with a headache.

I've had pneumonia twice in the past and was really I'll. I can't go through that again for me or my family. I know of three local positive cases, two passed away (in 70s and 50s). The other about 60 still isn't 100% after having it in June. All this probably means I'm more concerned but having said that I know some of my colleagues feel the same

PrivateD00r · 16/09/2020 09:58

Despite having asthma, I am genuinely not anxious about the virus. There are much worse things out there and I don't worry about those, so why would I worry about this? I may be influenced by the fact that I worked right through (midwife) so have got used to it I guess. I can understand how school staff etc would be anxious as they have been off for some time and it takes time to get used to it.

I do of course worry for my dc. They are struggling with the 'new normal' in school. They haven't been allowed to do PE most days as it was raining and PE has to be outdoors, they cannot go out in the rain as they aren't allowed to change. So they really are stuck in one classroom all day and its roasting. I was stuck in all day yesterday in PPE and had a migraine going home, so I can empathise with them. All teachers, classroom assistants and many dc wear masks in their school, it is totally rotten for them. A few teachers take their masks off from time to time because they are so hard to wear, they are lovely and ask the kids if they mind them removing them. We are blessed with lovely lovely staff in our school. I hope school staff settle in and feel a bit less anxious soon. I was very sad the other day reading a post from a teacher saying she has went on antidepressants due to being anxious about getting covid :-(

I honestly don't know what the answer is.

OpheliasCrayon · 16/09/2020 12:42

@wasthataburp well I mean I guess some people probably do need to shield and are right to be worried. I personally am just happy to take the risk and would prefer that for my young family that they don't miss out on stuff. But I mean...if vulnerable people want to shield I respect that. I just don't like the suggestions I have had on here that my choices are immoral or whatever

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/09/2020 12:49

1/2 for the actual virus

9/10 for education - have two of our three children at home already as postive tests in their groups - across city 9 schools have sent pupils home to self-isolate and in secondary schools that's the entire year group sent home which is hundreds of pupils.
