To think this isn’t correct, re. testing

My daughter has a cough so we’re all isolating waiting for the results of her coronavirus test.

In the meantime I develop the cough also. Email the testing site to book myself in and am told if my daughter comes back negative than I don’t need a test and can assume my cough isn’t coronavirus.

Is this right? I mean I know it’s very likely that the cough I have came from her but it’s not guaranteed. There’s nothing stopping me from developing coronavirus and her a normal cough at the same time.

I’m just conscious that following her result I will be returning to my NHS frontline role with vulnerable patients not really being sure that my cough is innocent.

Screenshot the email but obviously covered identifying info for both of us.

That doesn’t make any sense. As you say you could have picked up something else, especially if you’ve also been at work.

I’d be very surprised if our trust were giving the same advice.

F##k me, we're all doomed if this is the advice coming from the professionals.

I had coronavirus in April, my wife in June, the advice was that as I'd had it, I didn't need to self isolate. I work away from home when I'm on call The advice changed 2 days into a 4 day shift where I'd been staying in a travelodge and been in contact with a hundred or so patients.

So people who have none of the symptoms are being forced to test (and wasting resources) to resume normal life, while someone with an actual symptom and a front line NHS worker is told not to?! This whole charade is madness.

Rudolphian · 15/09/2020 11:13

I wouldn't be waiting. People are having trouble getting their tests within the 5 day limit.
You dont want to find out on day 5 she is negative and then you cant get a test.

bengalcat · 15/09/2020 11:16

That’s ridiculous . Not least because a negative test for her could be a false negative .

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 15/09/2020 11:17

Well I guess it makes sense as there is a massive shortage of tests and i guess the gov are trying to stop whole families being tested for a cold. BUT, this should not be happening. As you said you could have something different and it is wrong to risk that and go against the official gov advice just because they've cocked up massively in their preparations for the return of schools.
BTW same situation here, dc have coughs and we are awaiting results and this morning I've woken up with symptoms too.
