Teething fever?

My 6 month old has been having less milk for a number of days but yesterday started having a fever. It was 38.8 overnight and he wont sleepsettle much. .I thought it was teething as his gums really hurt to touch. Any thoughts? My oldest used to get fevers when teething but never went off food. With covid thrown in I'm utterly confused.

I'll probably get destroyed for this but I've always found the 'theyre teething so that explains the fever " excuse to be bollocks. No offense meant but if a kid has a fever they're unwell. They may also happen to be teething but one doesn't cause the other. Sorry. They're not well. It's up to you whether you test or not or isolate but that's somewhat of a high fever being nearly 39...so it's not going to be teething

Sorry - it's up to you whether you test or isolate -- I mean I totally understand if you don't want to test a baby (I dread having to test mine) so... You'd either choose not to test and therefore isolate..or test and get a negative and then stop isolating.

I didn't mean you could choose not to isolate with a fever of 38.8

Yeah I will probably get him tested. Hes been tested a few months back and although I felt awful for doing it as he did scream, I know its necessary in theses times. I think im so exhausted I can't think straight at this point.

Agreed. A fever is the body fighting something, a virus or infection. I've never understood people saying this. If you look into it, there's no science behind it

Children are more likely to get fevers when they're teething. But this is because when they're teething they naturally want to put more things in their mouths. Obviously not everything is clean so they're more likely to pick up viruses and get fevers or get bad tummies. But teething in itself causes none of those symptoms. Other than being in pain and being cranky and I guess also off their food if their mouths hurt !

Agree that's too high to be teething related. Mine did run hitter when teething but still within normal range.
It took us four hours of refreshing the page to get tests yesterday. We had to drive for an hour to a test site.

Good luck!

I tested my 13 month old and it was no where near as bad as I thought. She is less receptive to me wiping her snotty nose than she was to test.

CrackersDontMatter · 13/09/2020 08:36

I'd say that's a proper fever. I've found that when mine have been teething they've had a raised temperature so say 37.5 but not tipped over the 37.8 that would signify that they were ill. Hope they are feeling better soon.

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/09/2020 08:40

I agree with previous posters, that's too high to be a teething fever. Mine runs hotter when he's teething - maybe 37.3 or 4 at most - but that's a high fever.

I managed to get a home test kit ordered so will be able to test tomorrow. His fever hit 39 so we called 111. He was screaming and was sick. Spoke to a gp who I'm sorry to say was useless. Got told to go to an appointment no where near where we live only to get there and be told we would not be seen because he had a fever. Told to go to emergency department 8f got worse. Thankfully we finally managed to get medicine down him and it reduced the temp. He wont take it in syringe as he gags and throw it up.

Going to call my own doctor for peace of mind. Although thankfully his temp is now normal. But still not eating usual amounts. And he wont lie flat to sleep at all!!

This makes me so angry. He is a very small baby, clearly unwell with a very high temperature. Normal medical care cannot stop because of Covid. They should have seen him. I really hope you manage to see someone and he is better soon.
