How long would you expect temperature to last?

DD had a temperature of 39 in the night. This morning it’s back to normal and she is fine. She is teething but I think 39 is quite high!

Is it an instant temperature you need to test? Or would you expect one to last longer than this did?

I’d say a continuous one, how old is DD?

My DD had a really high temp during full lockdown and we kept her off nursery, we didn’t get her COVID tested and didn’t even contemplate COVID because of her age, neither did doctor ( telephone appointment), turned out that she had impetigo which gave her a raging temp.

She was off nursery for a week in total.

Changedmynamelots · 13/09/2020 07:26

Her temp was 39.3 at the highest!

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/09/2020 07:27

I’d say a continuous one,

Are you medically trained?

Snailsetssail · 13/09/2020 07:33

She is 18 months and cutting some top teeth. Red face, terribly dribbly.

Me and DH are both key workers. If I could get a test today I would take her to be reassured, but there is nothing available and so it’s going to mean multiple days off work for a temperature that lasted a few hours at most.

Teething sounds like to me, I’d think no more of it personally!

ring 111 if you aren't sure, but the advice is if they have a temperature or feel hot to the touch they need a test. 39 is high and it lasted a couple of hours.

YoBeaches · 13/09/2020 08:18

It was reported that the temp can come and go I think more so in children. It might well be her teeth but you should get her tested. 39 is high for teeth. Ring 119 and they'll help.

Snailsetssail · 13/09/2020 09:04

@YoBeaches the gov site tells you not to ring 119. No tests available at all. I’ve filled my details in about 25 times already this morning and nothing comes up.

Oh that's a shame. I've heard it taking up to an hour to get though on 119 but didn't realise they now say don't call. It's ridiculous isn't it.

Snailsetssail · 13/09/2020 09:27

@YoBeaches I think you can call for advice on symptoms but it now says not to call as they don't have access to testing.

At temp of 39c is an illness not teething. If you google nhs and temperature in children it explains when to seek medical help; it varies by age. The government originally said any temperature about 37.8c requires a Covid test, they’ve now changed that to feels hot but I suspect that’s because not everyone has a thermometer.

Snailsetssail · 13/09/2020 09:39

After many many goes through the system I've managed to get her a test for later today. I had to say I also have symptoms as a key worker for it to bring up options for us both so we are now both being tested. If she does have it she has likely got it from me anyway as she hasn't been out anywhere.

Glad you managed to get a test. Such a faff! Hope all are well!

Both my children had high temperatures like this during teething when there was nothing else wrong with them.

Yep last year my youngest got to 39.4 twice overnight then gone in the morning. Both times a tooth popped through next morning. Could be co-incidence but my eldest was same so I doubt it.

I did get him tested this week though as it happened overnight again but then up and down over the next day too with grumpiness. Waiting on that result now. Still think it's teeth again- canines have just burst through.
