Schools - symptoms and siblings

DS' school states that if a child has symptoms but not yet had a positive test result, their siblings should still attend. Only positive test results mean self-isolation for siblings. This runs contrary to the current NHS guidance on circumstances under which you should self isolate (do so if anyone you live with has symptoms). Are other people's schools taking the same line?

We were sent this from school.

No, that is not correct. We have been send the same as the poster above, I assume this is the advice provided by public health England, as our school has had a case this week.

No.
Current NHS advice states that if you live with someone who is showing Covid symptoms you all self isolate immediately.

Your school is wrong. As soon as someone in the household shows symptoms then everyone in the household must self isolate. Nobody must leave the house to go to work, school or anywhere else except a testing location!

Sorry too blurry.
It's basically the same as these

I can't see how it can be right for siblings to attend. That needs clarifying with PHE locally I think, the council could help with that.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/09/2020 15:20

I wouldn’t be following that advice and I would be letting your local education authority (or whatever it’s called now) and public health team know what they’re advising.

AldiAisleofCrap · 12/09/2020 15:20

@BiarritzCrackers the school are confused if your child is self isolating due to a child in their bubble having symptoms siblings can attend. If it is your child with symptoms siblings cannot attend.
How can they not know this? It’s government guidance and public health regulations!

BiarritzCrackers · 12/09/2020 15:28

They haven't produced a grid like that, which is a helpful and clear thing to have - it was a paragraph in the the newsletter saying as I paraphrased in my OP. I went and checked that NHS link above after reading the newsletter, as I wondered if I had somehow missed a significant change in public health policy! I guess I better tell them.

This was the paragraph:
The latest guidance from PHE is that unless your child is displaying symptoms of coronavirus then they are safe to come to school. You only need to apply for a test if your child displays symptoms – a temperature being the main indicator. If you have more than one child and the sibling is not displaying symptoms they are able to come to school until such point as the ill child’s test has been shown to be positive.

The latest government guidance (updated 10th September) for schools has as their number 1 protection measure:

Minimise contact with individuals who are unwell by ensuring that those who have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or who have someone in their household who does, do not attend school.

That seems pretty clear that those who have siblings with symptoms should not be attending school...
