Why new rules start on a Monday

If the government are concerned about the rise in cases why start the rules on Monday giving everyone a last weekend of larger gatherings/ parties etc. Why not just start it from the day they did the announcement last week?

Time to make it law and so police have powers to enforce it?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/09/2020 12:17

Because its not that urgent.

unchienandalusia · 12/09/2020 13:00

Freshers week.

RiftGibbon · 12/09/2020 13:04

I woueld like to think it is because people might be visiting others who will now not see anyone again until the rules change but I suspect it has roots in economics.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 12/09/2020 13:05

Bodgie had party plans this week end

MayFayre · 12/09/2020 13:14

They’re still writing them.

RancidOldHag · 12/09/2020 13:15

Because they got caned when there was a local lockdown imposed at Eid. This is letting people have their last planned gathering, and hoping not too many people are making new plans.

Because it's going to get a whole lot stricter in 48 hours, but the way the numbers are going, people won't be minding that

OddBoots · 12/09/2020 13:57

I don't have much truck with the government in many things but in this kind of thing they can't win, they give notice and people can and sometimes do have some kind of final fling but don't give notice and it is seen as a short notice or last minute change of plans.

To most of us the announcement of this is enough for us to realise we are looking at problems and if we can start early then that will hopefully reduce the length of the restrictions - most people have some common sense, the others are in the minority, I like to think.

cologne4711 · 12/09/2020 14:01

I think they had to get the regulations through parliament.

lljkk · 12/09/2020 14:04

govt can't win:

Almost No Notice? How dare you implement this at short notice! Why didn't you tell us sooner?

6 days notice? If it's so important then why wait?!

Trying to give a little notice is a better strategy for keeping public supportive of all control measures, that govt are trying to reduce the disruptions and use their powers minimally.

ListeningQuietly · 12/09/2020 14:37

because the virus wanted to go to the beach this weekend

meditrina · 12/09/2020 16:08

Why do the regs have to go through Parliament - the power for the govt to impose them was all dealt with back in March wasn't it? Or have I missed something important?

I think the reasons are fourfold

  • don't want to give people no notice (that backfired rather badly in Leicester)
  • do want to get all the online social media chuntering about how awful or is all done with before the measures come in
  • people who had plans this weekend might have just done it anyhow, which doesn't really set a tone of compliance, and when people have breached something once, it's easier to breach again
  • but some people want to stick two fingers up and have a last wild and unsuitable party (that they might not otherwise have had). They can get their rebellious energy out of their system this weekend, and then sober up under the new regs
Ranunculi · 12/09/2020 16:09

Because the toffs wanted to have a horse racing event last weekend.

trollopolis · 12/09/2020 16:10

The st Leger would have run anyhow, and as the toffs are owners they can go irrespective of whether the plebs are let into the stands
