‘Eat Out To Help Out’ May have driven spike in Covid cases

You honestly couldn’t make it up! Anyone with an ounce of sense could see that it would. Now we’ve spent taxpayers money on half price Big Macs, encouraged obesity and will probably end up in another lockdown costing even more money if cases keep rising as they are. I swear my 8 year old could have made better decisions than this shiteshower!

Wow two threads basically saying the same.

Luckily hospital admissions and fatality is decreasing. 👍

NewAutumnName · 11/09/2020 18:40

I thought that many of the outbreaks were linked to large social gatherings

Usergroundzero · 11/09/2020 18:40

@GreyGardens88

I think the new spike is driven by working class people not giving a toss
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Those pesky poor people!

Yep - return to uni
Jrobhatch29 · 11/09/2020 18:41

Anecdotally my best friends mam has just had to isolate for 2 weeks after being in contact with a positive case. This person caught it whilst out for a curry along with 2 other people on her table whilst they were using the scheme

Errr, hospital admissions are actually increasing.

In England:

Admissions: 85, 84, 99 and 136. 6th to the 9th respectively.

Patients in hospital: 519>539>553>600. 8th to the 11th respectively.

You honestly couldn’t make it up!

You kind of did though, since you haven't provided any actual evidence. The article linked to below merely suggests the scheme may have been one among many factors.

Now we’ve spent taxpayers money on half price Big Macs, encouraged obesity

I'm pretty sure the scheme covered restaurants serving all sorts of food, including those more in favour with MNers.

I swear my 8 year old could have made better decisions than this shiteshower!

What does your 8 year old suggest then? Particularly in regards to helping out sectors of the economy which have been decimated by this crisis?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/09/2020 18:50

@GreyGardens88 you'd do well to remember that the working class people were the ones going out to work putting themselves at risk during this whole pandemic.

Worriedmum999 · 11/09/2020 18:54

We’d have been betting using that money to prop up the industries that couldn’t open safely and stick to takeaways. There’s absolutely no point spending all that money on saving the restaurants if they are going to have to close again in a second lockdown. A better plan would have been to let them stick to takeaway and outdoor eating and use the EOTHO money to support them further.

But that may happen in any case. So the thinking might have been to allow them to make the most of the time they could be open.

A better plan would have been to let them stick to takeaway and outdoor eating

But many restaurants are not set up for either.

islockdownoveryet · 11/09/2020 19:02

Sorry @GreyGardens88 us working class are the fault of Covid . I think we should all be in lockdown for the foreseeable while you rich folk get on with running the country.
Let's see how long you manage without supermarket staff , cleaners , office staff , delivery drivers , warehouse workers I could go on .....
I'm sure your not serious Confused

It’s not just saving the restaurant. One restaurant pays the wages of many people - servers, chefs, deliver drivers, product suppliers, the butchers, the abattoir, the farms

Don’t you realise that Confused

However fatalities are reducing across all ages. We’re at our lowest point.

It’s ridiculous to go in to another lock down

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2020 19:09

What are you basing this on op?

News or print

expectingnumber3 · 11/09/2020 19:17

Redolent, please can I ask where those figures are from? I've been searching for that very info!

Keepdistance · 11/09/2020 19:17

Maybe. But seems likely it's the flights so again the economy.
Problem is that say
Holidays
Pubs
Soft play
At the moment they are full of the dont care ones risk takers so obviously they are already higher risk to each other. But also maybe people less likely to test or isolate.
Some of these people are in multiple venues. I saw scotland i think said 1 pub a night.

Stinkyguineapig · 11/09/2020 19:24

Lots of things opened up over the summer, holiday lets, people went on holiday (uk and abroad) , some sports clubs started, theme parks etc as well as pubs, cafes and restaurants.
I thought the stats showed it was mainly spread in houses although that could be convenient as those are the only gatherings that dont contribute to the economy

There’s somebody on the Coronavirus UK subreddit who collates the figures every single day. Very helpful as I don’t know how to crunch them myself! Another poster also collates the highest 25 local authorities for case rates every day.

This is the daily update thread for today:

movingonup20 · 11/09/2020 19:28

Gatherings in private spaces are the main driver - Leicester's huge rise was before pubs even reopened! Family gatherings they call them. Just eaten out and unless the waiter/chef is sick there's no chance of catching it, too far from other diners whereas those having bbqs in their gardens and buffets in houses are not distancing

expectingnumber3 · 11/09/2020 19:29

Thank you Redolent, very helpful!

Keepdistance · 11/09/2020 19:32

Yes devon and cornwall still seem unaffected. So surely not restaurant etc predominantly.
Im interested in how many positives had been abroad.
Problem with the covid measures they are largely based on our behaviour.
How many actually handwash even after the park
How many restarauntss etc are opening windows.
Kids gelling hands when they get into school
Cleaning the soft play equipment

Anyway the issue is that people are going inside together.
Even groups like brownies are being told they can go inside. People seem to think they are ok if they are 2m away.

DoubleDolphin · 11/09/2020 19:33

We ate out about 8 times and there was only one place where I thought the next table was a bit close and even then it was about 1.5m away from us. So, no, I dont think eat out to help out has caused this. Probably more the fact that everyone has been on staycation and sat in pubs drinking themselves stupid and got too close to everyone.
