Do you think my Dd needs a test?

Dd has woken with stomach cramps and terrible diarrhoea. She is rushing to the loo every few minutes. She is 10 years old. Does she need a test? She said the water she is sipping tastes funny too.

No not unless she has fever, cough or loss of taste &smell.

Sounds like a stomach bug to me. Hope she feels better

While it could be a stomach bug, some of the symptoms children present with first are exactly what you describe. Vomiting and diarrhoea. Combined with the funny taste - I'd get her a test if it continues.

I think with the shortage of tests at the moment people should only test with clear symptoms of COVID. The taste & small thing is a loss of taste or smell - could you give her an orange or lemon to smell and taste to see if she can?

polkadotpixie · 11/09/2020 06:35

Is it loss OR CHANGE to sense of smell or taste?

I think if you can get a test then I would do so as apparently an upset tummy is often a symptom, especially in children

polkadotpixie · 11/09/2020 06:36

I meant isn't it, not is it 🤦‍♀️

change of taste needs self isolation and a test.

Okbutnotgreat · 11/09/2020 06:41

Yes sort I think she should be tested. She was S exhibiting two known symptoms, a change in taste is definitely one and they’ve now said that children tend to have gastric issues mainly.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 11/09/2020 06:43

Yes - she has a change in taste so needs a test and you all have to isolate. Good luck getting one!

larrygrylls · 11/09/2020 06:46

I don’t think so. Feeling sick often makes things taste strange. If she is off school anyway, I would wait.

I think that we cannot rest with every cold or norovirus infection. We seem to have a cap of 175,000 tests now (the number has been stable for days). That is 1/400 of the population. In winter, probably 10 x that number will have a slight sniffle, cough, feel sick etc.

nannynick · 11/09/2020 06:51

I would keep her isolated and continue to monitor symptoms.
I would be looking for Fatigue, Headache, Fever. Those are the top three symptoms in children according to COVID Symptom Study. Also look out for any new skin rash as that can be indicative of being positive.
I would report the symptoms your child has via the COVID Symptom Study app, covid.joinzoe.com and keep reporting symptoms as they change.

Keep an eye on them, you know what they are usually like and when they are unwell.

nannynick · 11/09/2020 06:55

Can you test change in smell/taste. Have a little home science experiment... can they smell coffee, can they taste lemon, can they small an air freshener. Confirm that symptom and log it on the Symptom tracker app and combined with other symptoms the app will say if a test is advised.

If things taste funny, yes she should test.

Good luck Flowers
