School - how worried are you 1-10?

ChanceChanceChance · 10/09/2020 21:55

I'm finding it impossible to settle on how worried I am about school, about whether my children will pick up covid there and how worried I am if that happens.

If you were to put your worry on a scale 1-10, with 1 being 'no more worried than a normal year' and 10 being 'terrified', where are you?

I think I'm going for an average of 6 right now.

Now I'm really worried-last night my secondary school dcs admitted that at school hardly anyone pupils or teachers is using the one system or masks.
Apart from the head of the school who else can I bring up this issue with? Local mp is useless. Is it education or a Councillor? I'd withdraw them both (some health issues) but I think they'll react badly to that. I'd prefer the safety to be upped at school. Sorry to butt in on this thread but seemed an ideal question to ask here.

Hi, you can raise breach of risk assessment with HSE or the council or the governors.

1 - my daughters been back at nursery since June.
8 - the disruption to her life & work, bloody dreading it.

BiBabbles · 11/09/2020 09:04

2 for Covid at this point, but it wavers between 2 and 6 depending on the day.

4-8 for disruption as the schools were pretty good with the last lockdown, but I'm unsure how it will be if things happen again here.

8-10+ for the emotional impact and behaviour changes I've seen - I live on one of the main routes for multiple schools and the general misbehaviour from the secondary age kids has definitely kicked up a few notches from to be expected from kids to downright nasty behaviour more frequently. I've found primary age kids are so far lovely, they were rarely an issue before beyond a bit noisy at times, but some of the secondary ones, we haven't had a day yet since they've gone back without screaming & vile name calling (often followed by how it's 'just a joke' if they spot an adult watching or a child gets upset), kids getting pushed towards a very busy main road by their peers - we have a lot of large lorries that would struggle to stop short let alone all the cars, vans, and buses, and more. I hope it calms back down, but I do worry someone is going to end up seriously hurt and that we're going to have a lot of negative impact from this kind of bullying behaviour. Schools are aware, but I'm not sure what they can do.

  1. In fact 0 since they're washing their hands more than a normal year

Not worried about covid. I am worried about repeated 14 days of hell because it is impossible to test him and so we will have to stay indoors with all the self injurious behaviour and attacks on us that is likely to bring. The only likely way covid will get into our house is through school. It's only not 10 because he is in a very small bubble which they are strictly enforcing and there were no cases in the school during lockdown. We may have to break self isolation if it becomes unmanageable.

Thanks OP.

Quite surprised/concerned by all the 1s!

I’m not worried about risk to my children but long Covid affects people of all ages and I’m concerned for elderly relatives/teachers/other members of the community. Hmm

MamaGothel · 11/09/2020 09:24

About a 2 for covid. I am worried they will be sent home to isolate and I will have to attempt bloody homeschooling again.

tappitytaptap · 11/09/2020 09:27

1-2 for Covid (other than passing it onto my parents who do some childcare).
Much higher for the disruption. A kid’s dad in DS’s reception class has tested positive on day 4, the kid had been in school beforehand. So just waiting to see if the kid tests positive and that means we have to isolate for 14 days.

yellowmaoampinball · 11/09/2020 09:28

Why concerned about the 1s? Why would you want people to live in a state of terror? It's perfectly possible to be responsible and follow the guidelines when you're not actually too concerned about your own kids catching it.

ChanceChanceChance · 11/09/2020 09:30

I'm jealous of the 1s!

I can not shake this impending doom feeling!

Maybe I just need to drink more Grin

Fingers crossed that feeling will ease as we all settle into this.

I am with you on this op, a full 10 especially when I see things like this

There were articles about a rash being a symptom but it's not been listed in official guidelines.

I know a child who has rashes and is going to school. She is fine but maybe more tired but schools insist the 3 symptoms are only ones to check. No one knows if she has it and can spread it.

Why concerned? One of my children got Kawasaki syndrome after hand, foot and mouth. Another had long term complications from scarlet fever. Both caught at school. So I’ve always known the risks of sending my children to school. I’m no more concerned for their sake now than I am usually.
Lucindainthesky · 11/09/2020 09:39

About a 9. I'm not worried about DD catching covid but I am terrified of her bringing it home and giving it to DH who is vulnerable. I'm pretty scared of it too.

The only reason I've not said 10 is that I guess if I were that terrified I would have deregistered her.

It’s other parents that worry me. So far I’ve read/heard children being sent in with coughs, temps, siblings of isolating children in school etc. Even with social gatherings capped to six many will ignore as they are with SD.

Feel for the staff and those with vulnerable children/ parents and there are cases where healthy people have succumb to it or struggling with long Covid.

redferrari · 11/09/2020 09:45

I agree with you pp but the guidelines about sending siblings is not clear. Some schools have said it's ok as children don't catch virus. But it's one household of it's a sibling and as per old guidelines they should isolate, so sibling no having symptoms should also isolate. Pl share if you have any ljnk. It could be useful info to share.

Bupkis · 11/09/2020 09:49

I'm now a 10, actually more like 100. On the way out from dropping ds, I heard a parent of a child in his class say she was trying to get a test, as she had a metallic taste in her nouth and sinus pain, but couldn't get one...FFS.
