Covid

School - how worried are you 1-10?

I'm finding it impossible to settle on how worried I am about school, about whether my children will pick up covid there and how worried I am if that happens.

If you were to put your worry on a scale 1-10, with 1 being 'no more worried than a normal year' and 10 being 'terrified', where are you?

I think I'm going for an average of 6 right now.

Similar to others, not worried about them catching it. Fully expect they will at some point. Very concerned about the likely disruption to education. Luckily mine are only reception and year 4 so not in any exams years (I feel really sorry for those kids) but they’ve both only just gone back after 6 months and it’ll take a while to settle so disruption will be a nightmare both educationally and emotionally for them.

About 8/9 for health of them and us.

Not worried education wise as it doesn’t just have to be done at school, can be caught up on etc.

With no distancing measures possible due to classroom sizes and the fact that bubbles include hundreds of people I’m really worried

We are taking every possible precaution that we can but the risks are still very real, as the increasing numbers are showing. I dread to think what the numbers would be if the availability of tests was better.

Depends on the year icecream. I have a kid in year 11. Not much time to catch up on stuff now and actually not so easy to do that level of work at home. I can remember cock all of gcse maths, science, French. It was incredibly challenging trying to support her with that kind of work, even with plenty of input from school. She's much better off being in a classroom where she can interact with teachers as she learns.

Those of you who are 9 or 10 worried about your kids catching it, if they’re not vulnerable, why?

It’s almost always a mild illness in kids and teens, one of my children has had it. Confirmed via testing. He lost his smell, that’s it. Nothing else. Other friends had it, not one of the teens was more ill than a headache and feeling a bit off colour for a day. All 100% back to normal by the time their quarantine was up. This is the case for almost all healthy kids and teens

My child is medically vulnerable, as am I 🙁 hence why I am so worried.
But then many of the people who have died or ended up in induced comas have been those with no underlying medical conditions.

What scares me the most is that many top scientists are still scratching their heads about it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one,
It's not just about the children tho is it, it's about the wider community, not only are the children mixing with all the other children, but it's all the teachers and staff, not to mention all the parents and family, the amount of parents congregating at the school dates is unreal!!!!!

Because they could unknowing pass it to the rest of their very small family who for various reasons are all high risk, even though our health doesnt normally impact us. Age, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, asthma, previous TB infection... I worry who will then look after our children if dh and I are poorly. Obviously their grandparents cant. They have no one else.

@ChanceChanceChance please don’t take this the wrong way but that sounds like me prior to Prozac!

Is there a right way to take this? Grin

I'm not sure I need Prozac, just decent test, track and trace (or whatever the flip it's called!)

24 schools in my area have been impacted by cases in less than a week, so my worry at being in a high risk area is nearing 10, based on disruption during key GCSE years.

My only worry education wise is if we have to deregister or get fined.

Covid wise, I am worried because ds is medically vulnerable and was shielding. I am very scared for him if he catches it.

Healthwise for DS2 a 1
For DS1 with asthma it would be higher as I've seen how a basic cold or even hayfever triggers his lungs.

I am having sleepless night because since school started there is more movement of people and more numbers in public transport. This means kids can pass on virus easily.
