School - how worried are you 1-10?

I'm finding it impossible to settle on how worried I am about school, about whether my children will pick up covid there and how worried I am if that happens.

If you were to put your worry on a scale 1-10, with 1 being 'no more worried than a normal year' and 10 being 'terrified', where are you?

I think I'm going for an average of 6 right now.

1, DC picked it up at school end of Jan. At least 6 classmates got it too, which then spread to parents. Don't know if it spread to staff. DC was ok, me and DH got it to varying degrees but ok now just easily drained. Teen DCs did not get it.

I'm 1 as we've had it now and are likely immune for some time so not worried for us as a family. I wonder if we had one of the new strains as it spread quickly among the children and the children who got it all sit close to each other. I do think they should be cautious opening up all at once as from my recent experience it will easily take hold in a class/school if it gets in. The children likely fine but spreading outwards to families will cause problems.

About a 7.

I feel safer where I work (a school) than I do about my son coming home and passing it on to me, which I feel is quite likely to happen given the new more transmissible strains. As an older single parent it terrifies me to think that my child could be the one who puts my life at risk.

2 because there’s always a teeny tiny chance one of us could get it badly but it’s minuscule. DH is group 6 and having his vaccine on Monday so that reduces the worry even more, even though I’d be surprised if he got it badly (at least genuinely badly, is man-Covid a thing yet??).

  1. DH and I teach and our children attend school in one of these LEAs:

1 for Covid
8 for risk of being made to isolate as a result of a false positive from a close contact

I am at 10 now.

probably 1 for younger DD and 5 for older - more worried about older DD as she used to have viral wheeze and need an inhaler whenever she had a respiratory infection

But 10 for myself and DH as we both have underlying conditions (though not the kind that bump us up the vaccination list) and we have literally no-one to look after our children if we both get sick. Younger DD is little, very attached to me and would suffer huge stress and trauma if we were separated or even if I was just very ill for weeks.

I would feel a lot happier if my older daughter was wearing a mask in school (so would she) because she's in a tiny classroom with about 30 others. At least littler DD has more space and their desks will be set apart according to her school.

IloveJKRowling · 07/03/2021 06:21

Agree with PP, if I'd had even one vaccine I'd be fine with them going back to school - even as in older DDs case with no social distancing and no masks.

Or if even one of DH and I had had the vaccine.

Basically I'm terrified we both get it badly and there's no-one to care for our children.

Going back into same cycle of bubbles bursting. All for the sake of waiting two more weeks until after Easter.

If I could be 0 I would be.

Dingleydel · 07/03/2021 07:48

I was about an 8 as dc has very asthmatic tendencies (they have diagnosed it as viral wheeze). We had covid in the house and neither of my dcs had any symptoms. I didn’t test they but I’d be amazed if they hadn’t caught it. Now I’m a 1 and can’t wait to get them back.
