School - how worried are you 1-10?

I'm finding it impossible to settle on how worried I am about school, about whether my children will pick up covid there and how worried I am if that happens.

If you were to put your worry on a scale 1-10, with 1 being 'no more worried than a normal year' and 10 being 'terrified', where are you?

I think I'm going for an average of 6 right now.

2 - but I'm more worried about the sessions of 'self isolation' than worried about my DC being ill or passing on covid to others

Currently my stress level is about 8 worrying about my Y11 DS on course to fail all his GCSEs after so much disruption (and his lazy attitude which has always been there but covid has facilitates him being more disengaged in education than he previously was)

1
8 for concern over time not spent with peers and impact this has on mental health

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 20/02/2021 08:24

6 because ds (age 5) and DP are both cev if it wasnt for them and it was just me and the girls id be a 2 (concerned enough to be careful but not anymore worried than i would be if chicken pox was doing the rounds)

TimeForLunch · 20/02/2021 08:35

1, totally.

Off the scale terrified that they won't go back before Easter though. They need to be in school.

mrshoho · 20/02/2021 09:07

For those who feel 1/2, Are you this confident based on schools returning in full with the measures that were in place in September? Do you not have any concerns about the possibility of this leading to uncontrolled rising infection rates again? I want to be this confident but there's so much uncertainty. The one good thing is most CEV have been vaccinated and most over 65s will have been by then too.

Frazzled2207 · 20/02/2021 09:08

2 but 10 for the longer term impact of all this on them

There's more on anxiety on MN than there is in RL.

8/10
My kids (y8, y11) recently spent 1 afternoon in school. No gel available, 8 of the total 12 kids in a room no masks in school. Oh and 'lateral flow tests only available in the morning - you'll have to come back tomorrow if you want one'. I am CV, single disabled parent to two disabled kids - waiting on my jab.

8bitgame · 20/02/2021 09:14

1 in terms of them getting sick

2 -3 in terms of them making DH sick - no underlying conditions

6 - 7 in terms of them making me sick (am vulnerable but not enough to get a vaccine any time soon)

9 - 10 in terms of disruption to education and potential further lock downs

Angel2702 · 20/02/2021 09:16

I’m more worried about the thought of repeated isolations again. If they are going to get t I almost wish they’d had it before rather than the constant worry.

Timeturnerplease · 20/02/2021 09:21

Those worried about disruption to education due to repeated isolations/closures if it all goes tits up in hospitals again....would you support improved safety measures in schools? For example mandatory mask wearing (unless exempt), government funding for cleaning/adaptions to buildings to allow for some ventilation?

Not a dig at anyone (aside from the systemic underfunding of the education system), just a question.

  1. Only thing I would be worried about is them passing it on to my DGM as she does school runs for me some days but she's had her first vaccine and will have had her second soon so not as worried about that anymore.

DH CEV, me CV - was never that worried about Covid except the risk of both parents being in hospital and nobody to look after kids because all our close family are abroad.
DH has had first dose vaccine, I will get one soon. So the question should also be how worried are you now and how worried are you going to be once you have had a vaccine.

My kids are privileged and have been home, quite happy overall. The 7 year old really struggled mentally for a while and we had to do lots of work on this with techniques found online. My kids are all bright and engaged (at least top 5 per cent). However, they are now saying they want to stay home and not go back to school. They have adapted to this as “normality”. That worries me.
Mostly I am worried for other children who were never that engaged. That really concerns me both for them and on a societal level. I am sure there will be many impact studies on children and young people in years to come.

@mrshoho I'm a 1 and I'm happy for my children to go back just as it was last term. I'm happy for them to hug their friends and play in the playground, because the mh risk for them being kept separate is much worse.

I'd like there to be more measures for teachers though, but not masks for primary children.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 20/02/2021 09:48

@Timeturnerplease

Yes I would/do support those things. I’d much rather (in fact it’s ludicrous it’s not) tax payer money went on something of real tangible value than say, bailing out airlines. No ill will intended to anyone affected in that industry but it shouldn’t be govt supported when there is a far greater need elsewhere.

pommedeterre · 20/02/2021 09:50

1 for covid

10 for them not going back until after easter.

ILookAtTheFloor · 20/02/2021 09:52

1 for covid

2 for having to miss school again for burst bubbles.

6 for worried that my girls won't get to restart dance classes for many months to come.
