School - how worried are you 1-10?

I'm finding it impossible to settle on how worried I am about school, about whether my children will pick up covid there and how worried I am if that happens.

If you were to put your worry on a scale 1-10, with 1 being 'no more worried than a normal year' and 10 being 'terrified', where are you?

I think I'm going for an average of 6 right now.

Still at pretty much a 10. DD finished her two week isolation today after we were bullied in to sending her back meaning she had close contact with a positive pupil "for several hours". I'm a disabled parent and waiting and being afraid these last few weeks has taken the most hideous toll on my mental health. Caught in between not wanting to catch and potentially die of Covid but also wanting the DC's to keep their places at the good schools we tried so hard to get them in to. Just feel like I'm in a nightmare. I just want a choice, just until the Spring.

I am currently off sick with Covid. I will have at least 4 weeks off work, whether it's longer depends on what the gp says at the end of next week.

The only place I've had close contact with anyone other than Dh is school. I work across school teaching 270 children a week. I'm clinically vulnerable so I've been really careful. In school the only people I have close contact with is children. I still caught it, most likely from a symptom free child I suspect.

I was worried and it felt inevitable. I did what I could to prevent it but it didn't work. I caught it and was ill. I had a hospital staff due to complications and 3 weeks on I'm still slowly recovering and will probably need ongoing medication for a while yet, if not forever. And this was a moderate case.

I can only hope that when I go back I have some form of immunity.

My worry for returning is that people will think I'm not at risk anymore and I will be in the exact same situation. So let's hope that immunity lasts!

Based on the school I work in, it would be a 9.....

sotallsotall · 30/10/2020 23:10

My dd is currently in self isolation after a member of staff in her year (reception) tested positive. I literally haven't worried much at all. All the evidence points to me not having to worry at all.

Ijustcantcope · 30/10/2020 23:11

10 - want to keep them off until numbers drop

Worried about working in one (secondary) not so worried about my child returning (primary).

As a single parent I am worried about coping if I get ill. Cases have been low where I work but I know of people who have had a really rough time.

Aragog · 30/10/2020 23:17

Oh and I don't want schools to close. I do think schools need to be more Covid safe however. Right now they aren't. And the government doesn't care that they aren't.

I teach exam groups so I am worried about their exams and rogue algorithms from the DfE. I am assuming that those saying 1 do not have children Years 10 to Year 13. But lower years are important as students need the English and Maths bedrock taught

Aragog · 30/10/2020 23:20

If your area is anything like mine no schools closures will be kept quiet, it will be all over local facebook groups

No parent on my school knows how many staff currently have, or have just had, Covid.
Not all have lead to class closures due to timings, the way PHE works, and some only affected a small number of children. Some have had more than one adult in the class test positive.
We only tell the parents of the class or bubble affected.

It's not been on any local public social media nor any local press sites.

Kids getting it - 1

Disruption to school - 9

What numberblock said

Feckers2018 · 30/10/2020 23:45

In the NW so it’s a 8. Loads of teachers positive and bubbles and schools closing. Parents having children tested and sending them in until result known. If it’s positive the child has been spreading in class for days.

Covid 1 - educational impact 3

Enoughnowstop · 30/10/2020 23:49

10 . It is beyond my comprehension that we are expected to teach without even a nod to the exsistence of this virus and I am fed up with just how expendable we seem to be.

OuiOuiMonAmi · 30/10/2020 23:50

I'm the opposite of most people here - not even slightly concerned about their education (people home school perfectly successfully!) but more worried about bringing Covid home.

So many variables.

For the physical health of MOST of my students : 1

For me, as a pregnant teacher : 5

For my clinically vulnerable husband and elderly parents : 7

For the education and wellbeing of MOST of my students : 6

For the education and wellbeing of my vulnerable students : 10

Dustballs · 31/10/2020 00:05

10 - secondary, which has had lots of horrible (non tested for 'colds' and coughs)

8 - primary, which has had 2 cases in DS's class. Just less worried as they're younger and reportedly less likely to be badly affected.

Dustballs · 31/10/2020 00:07

Disruption to school - 1

Kids getting it 5 (primary) 9 (secondary)

Them passing it on to us (10)
