Sharing lifts - would masks negate track and trace isolation?

We live a fair way from school but not enough to qualify for a bus. For the last 3 years we have been lift sharing with 2 other families which has been a lifeline to mean that we can get the kids to school and parents to work on time.

There are 6 kids in 3 different years at school. We’ve not shared lifts since they’ve been back but it’s been very awkward.

We aren’t in the car for more than 20 minutes but I’m worried that if any of the kids or drivers get diagnosed with Covid-19 we would all get contacted by track and trace and have to self isolate for 2 weeks.

Would wearing masks mean that isolation would not be necessary should anyone become unwell? I’ve had a search online but can’t find a clear answer.

Hi. They wear masks at my DPs work. He is the supervisor and has to deal with track and trace everytime there is a case and they aren't interested that they wear masks. If you've been in close contact you have to isolate regardless. If they have car shared they are first on the list.

Agree with the first reply. I presume masks do lessen the risk (as do following the other mitigations recommended, ie windows open, seating as far as poss away from the other household etc) but not so much that isolation isn't needed.

Hmm. Thanks (I think!)

That’s what I thought deep down but I couldn’t find anything official.

The others are happy to restart the sharing but I think I’m going to have to opt out. It’s going to disrupt a really good system but I can’t imagine having to explain to work why I’m having to self isolate in these circumstances. I work in the NHS in a patient facing role so there’s no option to work from home.
