New rules of 6 in Scotland and England

So Nicola Sturgeon has just announced that the rule of six will apply in Scotland BUT only to a max of 2 households. Children under 12 do not count.

England allows up to six from any number of households but children do count.

So basically Scotland’s rules mean families are more likely to be able to meet up with other families/grandparents as the children don’t count. But only one other family.

And England’s rules mean that groups of friends can meet up more easily (so a group of six could meet) but families are restricted, especially if they have 3 or more children.

Just an observation really. I suppose the government can’t really win.

To be honest I think the new Scottish rules are ludicrous. Less than 1 case per 100,000 in most of the country, 7 people in ICU, very few deaths for months and now you can't meet 3 friends from different households in your garden.

All for a virus that poses virtually no threat to healthy under 75s! There is no guarantee of a vaccine anytime soon- we need to live with this virus instead of imposing massive restrictions on people's lives indefinitely.

Of course precautions like social distancing and mask-wearing etc should be used but these new rules are in no way proportionate to the threat.

Hopefully we’ll be welded in soon.

Yes to be honest I was a bit surprised at the SG for going in stricter than England. I had hoped it might be the same but not counting children, or up to 8 people as has been the case indoors so far.
But my area is in a local lockdown so not quite relevant yet here anyway.

Also in Scotland (and no doubt soon in England)

It will also become mandatory for staff working in hospitality premises such as pubs and restaurants to wear face coverings, and for customers to wear them while moving around.

The timing is not coincidental. Unis go back over next couple of weeks and a household could be 8 people in a houseshare! They are exactly the demographic spreading the virus so I for once think this is a sensible manoeuvre.

Where are you getting that most places in Scotland only have 1 in 100,000 ?? Confused Confused

In Greater Glasgow and Clyde, where the largest proportion of people in Scotland live, we have over 44 cases per 100,000.

West Dunbartonshire has 60 per 100,000.

Some other large areas not far behind.

I think it's very proportionate. 6 people from 2 households is fine for most people. It doesn't count children either. I just don't see what the big issue is.

The figure for positive cases per day is around 1 or 2 per 100,000 in most of Scotland @angryattrauma. There were only 12 positive tests yesterday in the whole of NHS Lothian, which covers around 1 million people.

Bear in mind that half of Scotland’s positive cases per day are from NHS Greater Glasgow.

angryattrauma · 10/09/2020 19:20

But there are still massive parts of Scotland - the most populous parts of Scotland - with really high numbers.

And per day is not what the 100,000 figure is measured by anyway, so you are confusing two different figures.
