Aibu to think some people have a pretty deluded expectation of police and their ability to enforce Covid laws?

I've seen a few comments on here today things like 'Id report you for having 10 people over instead of 6' or suggesting MN should have a responsibility to report threads about Covid law breaking to the police.

Coming from a family of police officers, the amount of calls reporting neighbours in the original lockdown (and still) was ridiculous and to be honest it leaves me wondering if people honestly think the majority of police forces have the capacity or resources to deal with these kind of reports?

Imo the likelihood is, nothing will happen if you report your neighbour for having 7 people round instead of 6. Nothing is going to happen if MN reports threads to the police about people planning a child's birthday party with 10 people and so on.

I'm not condoning rule or law breaking but it does make me laugh a bit when I see so many cries of 'REPORT TO THE POLICE' as if an officer is going to turn up with the hour and have a word with Margaret down the road for having 7 people in her garden.

It's the same with a lot of other subjects I see on here to be honest. People are always told to log this or that with the police.

The government said there would be ‘Marshalls’ to ensure compliance. Not sure what that would look like though.

I work GMP and we've had officers with cancelled rest days and extended shifts to do just this. No one wants to do it, it's a shitty job and people just want to be at home with their families on their day off. They're exhausted after working long hours all the way through (as are many other services, I know) and this is only likely to get worse as we head into winter.

One of my immediate family members is GMP too 👋 Smile

I've seen how shit it is for them (and other family members also in police). They have all said there is just not enough time in the day to deal with the amount of reports they are getting in about this stuff even with rest days cancelled and all the rest of it.

I certainly don't envy them right now.

Maybe the Marshalls will also play a part. I think there’s need to seen that reports are taken seriously to ensure compliance.
