Ffs. DC with classic cold symptoms now has cough.

DC has an absolutely classic cold. Day 1 and 2 sore throat. Day 3, snotty nose. Now Day 4 and he is chesty coughing, following exactly the same pattern he has for every bloody cold he has had ever. Almost all the children in his class also have colds, as they have done in the second week of a new school term since time began. WTF are we supposed to do?

We are in the same boat. Nearly had my dd tested because she was so ill 2 days in but didn't because it is a bad cold. Lots have it and the parents who have tested in our school have all had negative results. My son has it now. We are in an area where its really low

ChanceChanceChance · 10/09/2020 20:13

@BillywilliamV

It’s a cold, a cough is one of the symptoms!
No need for a covid test with this diagnosis confirmed Grin
GigantosaurusRex · 10/09/2020 20:13

@Lolly34h

DS woke up vomiting last night and so I've kept him off school today and will keep him off tomorrow. I actually contacted our covid enquiries team (NHS employee) and was advised that he wouldn't get a test as he isn't displaying the 3 symptoms.

Your nursery are correct in linking vomiting etc to covid as there is talk of adding it as a testable symptom in children.

Frustrating isn't it, hope you get sorted OP. I am trying to book a test for my coughing DD and the website just seems to hang on 'loading' - is this normal does anyone know, and is it better to wait on this page or cancel and start again? Thanks in advance if anyone knows. I have a job interview tomorrow for the first time in 20 years and it looks like I won't be able to go Sad even though I know its just a fucking cold 😫

Porcupineinwaiting · 10/09/2020 20:19

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon the only thing that is universally agreed about coronavirus symptoms is that they are very variable.

My neighbours little girl got diarrhoea, snotty, productive cough and a fever, her little brother a snotty cough and fever, one of my sons got a hoarse voice and felt exhausted, my youngest sweet fa til weeks later when he got a COVID toe.

GetUpAgain · 10/09/2020 20:20

@Karwomannghia

Thing I keep thinking is if we’ve all caught just colds this easily, what are we bothering with any measures in schools and workplaces for, when it’ll spread like wildfire if it wanted to regardless!
I completely agree, you'd think colds should have died out by now as we've all been apart so long!
Mumtofourandnomore · 10/09/2020 20:22

My whole family, myself included have had sore throats, sneezes and runny noses. This has transformed into the odd cough throughout the day as it always does. Runny noses and sneezing are explicitly not Covid symptoms, none of us have temperatures or a loss of smell. We haven’t had tests, I thought about it, but the cough is clearly related to the cold - if it were continuous or isolated I would definitely have got a test. I’m thinking now I’m mistaken (but a bit late now as we are nearly over it).

So according to the website, after 5 days of your cough it is too late for a test and you all have to isolate until 14 days have passed. Even if you feel better.
AppleKatie · 10/09/2020 22:05

Yes if you can catch a cold within minutes of the return to school (and loads of DCs have proved already that you definitely can, mine included!) even with the ‘safety measures’ Covid is quite clearly going to rip through the place at will.

wegetthejobdone · 10/09/2020 22:17

Has anyone had a successful test on a snotty child (or adult?) it says in the pack too much snot can make the test inconclusive. No drive in test results anywhere near us so we had to wait 5 days or so for a postal test result, so its not like we could repeat the test. I really wish I hadn't bothered now, next time the number of coughs required to trigger a test will be much higher!

MinnieMountain · 13/09/2020 08:09

@wegetthejobdone did you get a successful test result? I got DS to blow his nose lots just before and his test came back negative.

wegetthejobdone · 13/09/2020 09:56

No still waiting, so now too late to retest if it comes back as unclear. Really hoping we get it today. I had a much worse cough with a cold in the end and tested negative. Postal tests seem to be taking ages for everyone.

DelurkingAJ · 13/09/2020 10:10

We’ve all had a cold without cough but DS2 spiked a 38.8 degree temperature last night. Utterly maddening as he’s fine now but we have to self isolate and try to get a test (none of any sort available here) or the DSs miss two weeks of school and DH’s work (he’s a teacher) go stir crazy...I know the school can apparently get DH a priority test but that may not be for several days at which point it’s too late. Argh!

Lostinagoodbook · 13/09/2020 10:50

I got one tor my son from my work- they had a few for people who could not access tests so gave me one as they wanted me back in work. Still waited 3 days from posting it though.. .....

Lostinagoodbook · 13/09/2020 10:51

Am a teacher like your DH

Shitfuckoh · 13/09/2020 10:57

One of my DC started with sniffles on Thursday. By yesterday morning the rest of the house had cold symptoms - 2 worse than others. Eldest has woken up this morning coughing. Related to the cold I'm sure but it seems he's going to need to be tested & the rest of the house isolate anyway? Confused This is likely to happen a lot over autumn / winter. I was prepared for disruption but was hoping we'd make it to half term at least!

Redcups64 · 13/09/2020 10:57

You get a test!

(Because that’s easy...that was sarcasm...tests are like gold dust at the moment)

Tootletum · 13/09/2020 11:00

I had to do that. It is all going to be a very boring winter.

Nellodee · 13/09/2020 11:03

A runny nose is often a symptom of COVID. About a third of cases have rhinorrhea - google it. The reason it’s not on the test list is because the vast majority of runny noses are not COVID. This does not mean that if you have a runny nose, you can’t possibly have COVID, it just means it’s too common to act as a screening test.

I'm also really fucked off with the blame game the government are playing about people requesting tests who aren't eligible. It smacks of the daily mail taking about benefits cheats. Yes, I'm sure there are some fucking idiots who have requested tests for no good reason, but I bet the majority are people who are genuinely not sure about whether their symptoms are "eligible" particularly given how widely known it is that in reality there are many symptoms other than the main three.”

It’s quite hard to understand how people are managing to get appointments anyway, if they speak to 119 in person (that’s where 111 redirects directs you now.

We have been pretty much isolating bar my Late night walk and once weekly to the supermarket because of vulnerable household members. Highly unlikely that we’d come into contact but one had a 39 reading about three weeks ago, wasn’t sure what to do because of lack of exposure so rang for advice. They told us to go for test, we did, it was negative. But they question you pretty carefully about symptoms so anyone who has none whatsoever would be told no test needed?
Anyone turning up for an appointment is there because they’ve been told to go (phone bookings anyway, not sure of the online process).

Shitfuckoh · 13/09/2020 11:10

No home tests message... again! - there's a walk in 4 miles away but I don't drive and I'm pretty sure we can't get public transport Grin (said in jest, I'm aware we can't!)

Well I'll keep trying... but considering the runny nose started Friday for the DC in question with the cough & the other yesterday, I'm hoping it doesn't take too long to actually get one!

Tenner · 13/09/2020 11:14

all these "you get a test" responses Hmm I have been trying to get one since Thursday PM (though I confess to not being glued to the phone 24/7 and refreshing every half minute). System told me initially 'no sites found', i.e. no tests available and now it shows that the website it very busy and to try to book later again. No home test kits available either.

I wish there super smart 'you know the guidlines, get get a test posters' would realise that it is not as simple as 'get a test'. There aren't any!!!
