If someone you have seen has to isolate...do you isolate?!

We saw friends on Tuesday and seemingly a boy in one of the dc classes has now tested positive. They have to isolate for 14 days. Do we?! Do I need to take my dc back out of school?

Don’t worry chance it was me with my name change.
It’s all just confusing and because I’m vulnerable it’s making me so anxious.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 10/09/2020 07:43

i would look on the you.gov website op
hope you find your answer

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 10/09/2020 07:44

i think the link looks too tenuous tbh but check it out officially

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 10/09/2020 07:44

my dd worked with someone who tested positive, she had to isolate but not me, if that helps.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2020 07:47

I’m not quite clear on what has happened.

Is the boy who tested positive in your support bubble? If so, you do have to isolate as it is effectively as if he is in your household.

If he is just a contact of someone else who tested positive, you don’t have to isolate.

Danceswithgeckos · 10/09/2020 07:50

The child we saw is a contact of the original person who tested positive. So we are contacts of a contact.
I suspect this is going to happen all the time isn’t it? In various different ways.

GreyishDays · 10/09/2020 07:51

So it’s as if they’re one of your household:

Like if your child was in contact with a case at school, do they rest of you need to isolate? I think no. But maybe check.

Obv any symptoms changes everything.

Contacts of contacts don’t have to isolate.

Hmmph · 10/09/2020 07:54

The child who was in the class with the child who tested positive has to isolate, but no one else does. Not even his parent.

I think...

ZiggeryZaggy · 10/09/2020 07:56

If someone in your household or bubble has symptoms then you have to isolate - either for 14 days or until they get a negative test result. You do not need to have a test unless you have symptoms yourself.

If someone else you have been into contact with has symptoms then you do not to isolate. If they get a positive result and you have been within 1m of them for 15 mins or more (without PPE) then you will need to isolate.

Feminist10101 · 10/09/2020 07:58

You’ll be told by track and trace to isolate if you were in close contact (less than 2m) within 48 hours of them having a positive test. Otherwise, no.

SquishySquirmy · 10/09/2020 08:03

The official advice is that even if you know you have been in contact with a positive case, you DON'T have to self isolate unless contacted by track and trace.
Which seems insane to me, because it assumes that test and trace is infallible!

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/09/2020 08:04

@Danceswithgeckos

So maybe on that basis we isolate? Or maybe not if it’s only the dc who have had contact directly have to isolate as in the post above. Heavens knows basically.
If you are a bubble, that means you're treated as one household for isolation purposes. If one person in the bubble /household has symptoms everyone self isolates. If the test is positive they continue to self isolate, if negative they can all stop self isolating. (source - government guidelines, I am in a bubble and one of the people in it had symptoms, then a positive test, we all self isolated having checked the guidelines)
ZiggeryZaggy · 10/09/2020 08:55

The bubble thing is definite - but sometimes people say “they are in my bubble” to justify having socialised with someone, as they feel defensive.

So, is it someone you and your family have had close, non social, contact with (as you would as if you were genuinely in a support bubble) or is it just someone who have seen socially, at a distance of over 2m?

In bubble - Isolate
Not in bubble - no need to isolate at the moment

TwoHoots74 · 10/09/2020 08:56

Name change fail too I think!!

Danceswithgeckos · 10/09/2020 09:09

Yes we are a bubble.
We saw them for maybe an hour?
But it’s not even clear if my friend needs to isolate - although she will - or if it’s just the dc.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2020 09:11

I’m not sure what’s not clear. Your friend had no contact with the positive case so doesn’t need to isolate.

KitKatastrophe · 10/09/2020 09:14

Only the person who was in contact with a positive case has to isolate. Otherwise it will be everyone in the country before long!
