Rule of 6 and Christmas

Do you anticipate that Christmas will be vastly different this year? We are a family of 3 and my DH's family (who we are supposed to go and spend the day with) consists of his Mum, Stepdad, dad, 5 children and 2 partners of those children. Plus us. So we wouldn't be able to go round there based on the new law. I had my doubts already but the new law absolutely rules it out.

Do you think people will be having Christmas within their "nuclear" families this year?

I wonder if they'll give us all an extra bank holiday in 2021 once the vaccine comes she says hopefully?

If people have larger families people can meet at certain times. By appointment only Grin

christmas is still over 3 months away so who knows what its going to be like however i would prepare that you cant meet other households just in case

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/09/2020 17:20

It will be different for us. No big family get togethers but smaller visits to grandparents, after we've self isolated to ensure we dont pass them anything. I neay killed off MiL with a nasty cold last Christmas, not prepared to risk giving her anything worse.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 09/09/2020 17:20

Milky

Last year we had the five of us, ds1 partner and my dad

This year ive no clue...dad is supposed to be going to my brothers, ds1 and partner to partner’s parents and dd may be working at a pub

So we could ( depending on covid restrictions) have either 3 or 7 of us for Christmas lunch...

Llamalou · 09/09/2020 17:23

I have gone along with the rules all along ie socially distancing, not seeing my grandparents for 5 months, keeping my parents away from my kids, dh staying away from his parents, keeping my dc off school when they could have gone back, wearing face masks which we've been doing since March etc, but omg Christmas is the ONE thing i am looking forward to, and whilst i won't go stupid having our usual large gatherings, i will be having my DM and DF round for Christmas lunch as usual despite us being a family of 5 and being one person over the limit. We won't be having our usual new year's eve party where we usually have both mine and DH family, so 30+ people, but i will make sure my dc have the best Christmas that they possibly can, given the shit year they have had, and yes that includes seeing family members separately if need be, but none the less interacting with the people we love.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 09/09/2020 17:32

We live quite near parents as a family of 5 so can imagine me and the kids going to my parents for tea and presents in the morning and she taking the kids to his in the late afternoon to do similar maybe. Everyone has lunch at home. Or split the kids up and do both at the same time.

To get the cousins together we could only have one adult - maybe on a different day?

Mind you the more I look at that having just written it down the more depressing it sounds.

Have to see what the climates like by then

I bloody well hope so! Xmas Grin

DracoDormiens · 09/09/2020 17:55

I’m happy to abide by the rules at the moment but I will be spending Christmas with my family.

Ellmau · 09/09/2020 17:58

I feel it's unlikely people will be allowed big family gatherings this year. It's very sad for single people.

MrsBrunch · 09/09/2020 18:08

This could turn out to be the best Christmas ever! Grin

I get martyr fatigue around Christmas. People stressing, complaining and making one day into a massive, unpleasant, faff. (And that's just on mn).

Get up when you want, eat what you want, no big shop because you won't need that much food and can buy gifts online, have a pj day if you want. Bliss. Fingers crossed for a lockdown Christmas here Xmas Smile

MilkyBarKidd · 09/09/2020 19:18

Haha @MrsBrunch GrinGrin

I came to say the same @MrsBrunch sounds perfect with the excuse that we would have loved to come but can't do to the restrictions!

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/09/2020 19:38

@Ellmau I'm sure a lot of single people will still be joining family for Christmas. Big difference bw that and having 20 neighbours round for a buffet on Xmas Eve, then all the cousins over on Boxing Day.
