Why is Covid affecting schools?

Latest updates are there have now been 421 outbreaks in UK schools. How is this possible? From what the government was implying throughout August was that schools would be safe environments which Covid would be unable to affect. How we was told that children don’t spread the virus.

You could understand the odd case here and there but that seems very high when most schools have only been back for one week. I suspect this number is much higher due to the lag in testing and results and indeed the amount of people unable to even get a test. Also we’ve not had enough time to really see the effect of spreading within schools from asymptotic carriers, just what has been taken in from being caught elsewhere.

We are still officially in summer, what will the situation be once the weather turns colder? Once the community transmission increases with the R rate now above 1?

Chienloup

My daughter was back at school one day. Got a temperature and now all of us are isolating until we can get a test result back. (Who knows when that will be).

Which is at it should be. Hopefully, your daughter is not vulnerable but many hundreds of thousands of children or their parents are. You’re looking out for them.

All the best, hope your results are back quickly.

Because schools ‘not’ Covid secure regardless of what Gav and his pals say.
Last month on here lots of posters wanted all kids back ‘as normal’. Teachers said it couldn’t happen but were shot down as they weren’t thinking of the children.
Now they are being told it’s because they have brought it into school / or the kids have.
So we will wait another couple of weeks to see how much of a breeding ground schools are.
In the meantime people can’t get tests or if they can they are waiting days to get results which means community / school transmission is ramping up.
If only someone had predicted this could happen.

And yes.They lied. Why would anyone be surprised? Boris has a history for untruths.

Why is Nicola Sturgeon lying as well?

The breakdown from the link is here.
• 103 Scotland
• 64 Northern Ireland
• 28 Wales
• 226 England

However it says;
"Source: Compilation of local newspaper reports, NHS reports, and school websites."

I randomly selected two of the schools - clearly pupils were not involved in these two outbreaks;

Wales 4 Sep;
"Maesteg School staff member tests positive for coronavirus."
"No pupils are affected and term will start for them, as planned, next week."

Sisteragatha - we don't have any school field. We have a concrete yard on a slope. It's not big enough for the whole school at one time as it is.

EachDubh · 09/09/2020 23:00

Why are people surprised teachers might carry it into school? Community transmission is on the rise, as adults they are less likely to be asymptomatic so get tested.
Whilst schooling will be disrupted we can take positive news from this that cases are being identified before transmitions within schools occur 👍
Most schools in Scotland are individual cases, caught, isolated and spread stopped. If we can work to refuce community spread we will be in a good place.

EachDubh · 09/09/2020 23:01

As for teaching outdoors 😂😂 my class would run away, schools often have lots of runners, even open windows are escape routes...

Figure now stands at 501.

My DD says there are about 12 toilets and 7 hand basins for girls at her school of over 1000 pupils (so between around 500 girls)
This cant be anything to do with the teachers, but doesnt inspire the idea of increased handwashing, and seems an ideal germ breeding ground as so many people will be using them.

mintpeonies · 10/09/2020 16:11

Sadly, I guess we are about to hit a wave of parents aged 35-50ish (parents of secondary kids) who are bound to be infected in the coming weeks.

donnadenise · 10/09/2020 16:14

Because schools don't have magic covid proof walls

Because the government are liars

Because staff and pupils can't socially distance or wear masks.

Because some parents send their children to school when they have one,y a cold' but the child has a temperature, can't stop shivering and clearly has covid.

stairway · 10/09/2020 16:17

Why can’t teachers and pupils wear masks? Teachers are choosing to wear masks in both my children’s primary and secondary school and in my son’s secondary school the kids have to wear them in some lessons. Teachers are able to wear exactly the same masks as thousands of NHS workers

donnadenise · 10/09/2020 16:19

@MrsMcMuffins

I think schools are not even trying to be Covid safe from what my children are saying (secondary).
And your children know about all schools ? 🙄

Because the government say there is no need
Howslifenow · 10/09/2020 16:22

500 schools impacted now in UK.

stairway · 10/09/2020 16:22

Donnadenise the government only said there was no need in March because they cocked up and did not have enough masks for NHS and care workers and that’s why so many of them died. Masks are now fortunately easily available and head teachers can decide on their use.

Cookiecrisps · 10/09/2020 16:26

@stairway in the school where I work we’re not allowed to even wear a clear visor as we’ve been told that it will unsettle the children. No pupils or staff are allowed to wear masks there either.

EvilPea · 10/09/2020 16:31

Ours aren’t even wearing masks on the bus.

stairway · 10/09/2020 16:39

That is terrible Cookiecrisps, especially since we now know that masks when used correctly really do help people catching a big dose of the virus.

Beebityboo · 10/09/2020 16:43

Three schools very close to ours now all have positive cases/groups self isolating. Think one of will be getting a "cough" this weekend to see where the land lies in two weeks. I really, really regret sending them back. Even I didn't thing things would go wrong so quickly.

notevenat20 · 10/09/2020 16:48

For English schools it's unlikely many of those were caught in school. There hasn't been enough time.

notevenat20 · 10/09/2020 16:52

A more important question is how many teachers have caught covid in schools.

I'm wearing a mask (secondary teacher). I'm one of 5/6 out of over a hundred staff members wearing one. No kids wearing them around school now (a few did on the first day).
gluteustothemaximus · 10/09/2020 17:00

There's a lot more than 3000 cases a day. A lot more.

But we can't get tests. We’ve been back a week and we've got several suspected cases but no one can get a test booked.

It’s utterly shit.

Oh, and despite what the gov says and what your school says, they aren't safe. It will spread. So if your child is vulnerable or you are, keep them home if you can. Social distancing is not possible. It was never going to be.

Agree. Sadly.
