Do secondary schools teachers really be to self isolate when a dc in a year group is positive?

Surely teachers should wear visors and/or keep 2m away from dc to prevent this. If a couple of year groups are having to self isolate plus the teachers surely this is going to cause the whole school to shut because of teacher shortages. If teachers wore visors if they have to go closer than 2m to a dc, and asked the dc they were too close to to wear a mask would this be preventable?

@PurpleDaisies

Pupils aren’t being told to wear masks either. Only required on public transport.

Some schools are requiring pupils to wear masks in communal areas. Loads are round here.

It's normal here

I wonder whether the writers of the guidance are men who assume teachers are taller than pupils?
My ds is taller than all his teachers many are in older secondary

The majority of kids I teach are taller than me. I’m not even short but seriously kids are massive these days.

I’m currently self isolating having enjoyed a whole 3 lessons and a lunch duty before I had to go off.

Exactly. If you are a 6' bloke imagining yourself head and shoulders above the majority of kids (especially while they are sat down), you may fail to take into account the 5' teacher who is breathed down on by almost everyone.

I'm doing my best to stay 2m away from the students, but it's not always possible due to the size and shape of the rooms. We have the windows open (about an inch as there is a safety catch) and the door to the corridor. Also have hand sanitiser. We wear masks in communal areas but not to teach. If a child I teach catches it, it's up to PHE to decide if I get sent home or not. No idea really what will happen. I'm in 6 bubbles as I teach 6 year groups in secondary.

In the absence of marked out boxes at the front of classes and with desks creeping forward like space invaders I’ve no idea what 2m looks like anymore.

HipTightOnions · 09/09/2020 11:46

No masks in my school. In theory I could choose to wear one but that’s pretty pointless when none of the students are. All my students are 6th form so grown men who tower over me. I’m supposed to stay 2m away but that’s impossible - even 1m is impossible in corridors.

There is a presence that we’re all keeping 2m apart (we’re not even keeping 2m from each other) so goodness knows what will happen when we get a case.

HipTightOnions · 09/09/2020 11:47

presence => pretence

Keepdistance · 09/09/2020 11:49

The plan was supposed to be 2 cases. As it seems to be 1 case closing bubbles (good) i think it must be clear there are goung to be huge numbers of cases in schools.
I mean if 1/2000 infected say. That would be 4250 teachers and students a week i think.
1/8 of the population is a child and they are all now crammed in 30 to a room (plus sibling issues and bigger bubbles) with - wash your hands

SaltyAndFresh · 09/09/2020 12:10

With wash your hands if you can find time, otherwise keep coating them in sanitiser and hope for the best.
