Current levels of infection: 7,007,039
Number of mild infections: 6,946,649 (99%)
Number of serious/critical cases: 60,390 (1%)

Do these numbers make anyone else think, what the fuck are we doing damaging the economy, our children's future and mental health for figures like this?

Yes.

PinkMacaron · 09/09/2020 07:33

Also, yes.

Jontysmum · 09/09/2020 07:34

Yes.

kimlo · 09/09/2020 07:36

No. Small numbers can become large numbers. If we had acted quicker in the first place lives could have been saved, and we could very quickly find outlrselves back in the position we were in before. Numbers were low then until they weren't.

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 09/09/2020 07:37

Yes

SexTrainGlue · 09/09/2020 07:39

It's only low because of the restrictions.

because once it flares into a large outbreak it runs whole countries.

Just look at what is happening in India right now

Layladylay234 · 09/09/2020 07:39

Thank god its not just me. 1% ffs.

OP posts:
Timeforanotherusername · 09/09/2020 07:40

And what is 1% of the worlds population that you want to kill off?

Peony9876 · 09/09/2020 07:42

It is the mild cases that typically go on to experience long covid with a variety of neurological and cardiovascular symptoms

Layladylay234 · 09/09/2020 07:42

Sorry,I should have made clearer, these numbers are worldwide. Worldwide 1% of people have the illness seriously. In different countries, with different restrictions.

And do we really know that that number is due to restrictions? Because Sweden certainly paints a different picture.

Anyway I'm not interested in getting into a bun fight about what COULD happen when there are people dying from cancer, suicide etc that have direct links to Covid. These deaths matter too. I just wanted to see if other people felt the same as me.

I’m so over it. I don’t give a shiny shit if I get it and die right now.

Loool, that is funny. If that's what you take from my post,I think you need to go and get a clue! Is everything black and white in your life? What a lovely way to live!

Yes

Miriel · 09/09/2020 07:47

No. I monitored Worldometer daily for a while and that number has been consistently low - in the UK, for instance, during the peak the number of serious cases was always far lower than the number of people reported to be in hospital during the daily updates. The percentage is based on incomplete data - many countries don't announce numbers of serious cases regularly, or at all, and some of the numbers on the chart are taken from academic pre-prints (studies of critical cases) and the like. They usually aren't updated daily like the case/death stats.

It's not reliable enough data to be using in support of any argument, I think.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/09/2020 07:55

Yes. I fear we will look back and say we overreacted.

donnadenise · 09/09/2020 08:04

Its low cos of the restrictions in place and will increase exponentially (and is doing so)

RedskyAtnight · 09/09/2020 08:07

This reminds me a bit of a TV show from a few years back. There is a plan to kill off half the people in New York. The good guys protest and the "bad" guys point out that this is only 0.07% of the world's population and what's 0.07%?

But I agree with PP - we don't know enough about the long term effects on those who had Covid in a non-critical way.

SonjaMorgan · 09/09/2020 08:07

@Waxonwaxoff0 the response has been ridiculous. The government did so little at the start before we actually knew the mortality rate and any long term health effects. We are lucky this virus isn't more deadly. And then they did a 180 flip and now we have this utter chaos.

Manolin · 09/09/2020 08:09

Er....all your posts on this thread are exactly 'black and white'.

Timeforanotherusername · 09/09/2020 08:10

I think its incredibly silly look at data that is as a result of the actions that have been taken

Also Worldometer is not accurate because data from many countries is not accurate.

Do you really believe so few people have died in Russia and India?

On the other we actually have massive under reporting of the number of cases so death rate may be less than 1%.

To look at the figures on Worldometer in such a black and white way is naive.

newyearnoeu · 09/09/2020 08:11

@timeforanotherusername get your maths right.

Approx 7million are infected out of a world population of just under 8billion. So less than 0.1% (more like 0.089) are infected and then only 1% of this number is serious (much fewer will be criticial). So even if every single person who is seriously ill from covid dies (which they wont) then it will be a maximum of 0.001% of the world's population.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 08:12

Yes. Some people are just loving the drama and will be mute if they can't say 'We're in the middle of a global pandemic'.

orangejuicer · 09/09/2020 08:12

Don't correct me, just agree with me. Ok OP. Clearly you have not lost a loved one to COVID.

I've thought it was madness from the very beginning.
