This was strange, right?

Ds3 had a weird thing happening with his neck, it looked like his pulse was fluttering and after sending videos to family to confirm I wasn't going mad I called 111. Thye ended up sending an ambulance as his breathing was getting a little heavy.

The paramedic took his temperature and it was 40.1, took his own to make sure it wasn't a dodgy thermometer and then did loads of tests. We then got taken to hospital and the doctor ended up sending him home as he had cooled down and said the tonsils looked large but no infection.

Should a coronavirus test have been done? Or at least mentioned to us. We were told nothing about isolating or testing. Luckily we live a dull life and pretty much isolated for 2 weeks after (bar me getting food).

It was 3 weeks ago now but I only just thought about it. At the time I was pretty panicked and just glad he was sent home. Shouldn't hospitals be carrying out tests if anyone comes in with a fever? I also wasn't given a mask or told to wear one at any point which is also a bit strange.

Only need a test if he had 3 of the main symptoms. My husband was in hospital in April/May. They only tested him as the next hospital he was going to insisted on him having one before going there. They are the experts and will know whether he needed testing or not.

dementedpixie · 08/09/2020 14:38

his temperature was 40.1⁰C so he did have one of the symptoms!

Fandajji · 08/09/2020 14:54

Yes he definitely had a temperature! I'm shocked it didn't click for me sooner to link it to the whole coronavirus thing. Even though it was put down as mild tonsillitis I still think we should have all been told to isolate. I know tonsillitis isn't contagious but I'm sure it happens because that person has had a virus. Could it be possible that he had coronavirus and then developed tonsillitis? Probably highly unlikely, but possible?

Anything is possible. But it's not likely, no. With only one symptom (and that seems to have been fleeting if he had already cooled down) then it wouldn't be standard practice to do a test.

conkersarebonkers · 08/09/2020 15:11

Relative of mine was admitted to hospital 6 weeks or so ago with something completely unrelated (chest pains) and was COVID tested. I thought it was pretty standard regardless of symptoms. Maybe it's changed in the last few weeks though.

Augustbreeze · 08/09/2020 15:14

You only need ONE of the main symptoms to do a test!

My guess would be that all the medics who saw him have enough experience of Covid in children to know that it doesn't (usually?) present like this, therefore they decided no need to test. But they should have explained that to you I would have thought.

Ponoka7 · 08/09/2020 15:21

It's if any symptoms haven't got another probable cause. So the temperature can be explained by an infection. Was the fluttering over a lymph node? That way we aren't putting children through the test for easily explained conditions.

In children D&V are more of a symptom than the ones adults get.

Fandajji · 08/09/2020 15:38

They didn't seem bothered by the pulse thing at all, he just nodded when I pointed to his neck. I just found it odd that there wasn't a single thing said about coronavirus when that's all I hear about! But yes I agree that the doctor probably knew it wasn't that and didn't to put him through a test for nothing, I'm quite glad he didn't to be honest

We are being sent a covid test because my son has tonsillitis and his temp is high they say as they can't confirm why his remote us high he needs to have covid ruled out

And antibiotics because he clearly has tonsillitis

Augustbreeze · 08/09/2020 15:45

@Ponoka7 I'm afraid it's not true to say "It's if the symptoms haven't got another probable cause".

Any of the main symptoms, however mild, test. That's the current message.

Fandajji · 08/09/2020 15:50

The fact that he cooled down also doesn't mean his temperature was a radom one off spike, he was pretty dosed up on calpol by the time the doctor came to see us. He had calpol throughout the night and the next day as he felt crappy. I really should have linked to coronavirus sooner, I feel so stupid that i didn't. I was just so relieved he was ok after being blue lighted to A&E that it didn't cross my mind after the docote said he was fine.

I think in your position OP many of us would have been similarly preoccupied! Glad he's better.

A boy at my sons school went home with a cold last Wednesday, tested positive on Thursday the whole year group is at home self isolating, secondary school too so a lot of kids

DumplingsAndStew · 08/09/2020 18:39

Fgs how are people still getting this so wrong?!

CKBJ · 08/09/2020 19:02

An aunt was taken to hospital last week-none of the 3 symptoms but was tested when admitted. Think it should be standard practice if we want to keep our hospitals Covid free and moving
