Who’s having a flu vaccine this year? Was wondering if you have to go inside the gp surgery?

I have just phoned to book mine - it's happening at a large leisure centre instead of the surgery - big foyer with 2 exits so a one-way system. Have to wear masks and socially-distanced queue with very specific appt time (every 2 mins)

Thegirlhasnoname · 08/09/2020 12:08

I’m pregnant so will be having one (as will my toddler as she is old enough for the nasal spray this year) but our GP have no idea when they will have stock of them so just a waiting game

CrunchyCarrot · 08/09/2020 12:15

Had an invite to go and it says they will have a 'socially-distanced queuing system' at the surgery. Whether that will extend outside the building I've no idea. We also have to fill in a form that says we have no symptoms on the day of the jab, plus asking whether we have an egg allergy or are taking antibiotics, or are immunosuppressed.

ginswinger · 08/09/2020 12:17

Yes, booked with my local chemist for 3 weeks' time.

RottingCorpse · 08/09/2020 12:43

No idea what my GPs are going to be doingConfused

I am in the vulnerable group so usually get the vaccine. I am still giving myself my B12 injections as GP surgery are refusing anything face to face.

Wolfiefan · 08/09/2020 12:47

I’ve just had a letter from the surgery. People can’t phone and book. There is a clinic but separate appointments are made for each patient. We have to wait outside.
Last year they couldn’t get hold of the vaccine for my age group. I had one at Boots. I booked an appointment wit Boots again this year. It won’t cost me anything as I’m eligible for one on the NHS.

frozendaisy · 08/09/2020 12:58

I've booked at pharmacy, have to pay I get one every year.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 08/09/2020 13:11

Booked mine this morning as I'm pregnant. GP has a portakabin in the car park especially put aside for it

tootyfruitypickle · 08/09/2020 13:20

Booked mine at Boots for a couple of weeks
Time. Had to pay in advance for first time - assume as they are expecting increased demand so want to make sure people don’t waste slots

Mindymomo · 08/09/2020 14:23

My husband is having his next week with the nurse at GP. I have booked one at Tesco pharmacy for the end of the month as GP said only those over 65 and have existing medical conditions will get them.

ThatDamnScientist · 08/09/2020 15:18

I am, I am going to a chain pharmacy - my surgery offered me a drive through (I don't drive) or an hour public transport ride to another surgery (no thanks).

I have been able to book me and dd1 in for them (hers paid, mine free) and DH is getting his at work (subsidized at work, but I think over 50s are supposed to be in the free flu jab group this year?)

Dd1 gets the nasal at school if they are doing them.

Deelish75 · 08/09/2020 18:39

Booked mine with Boots a couple of weeks ago. I’m not eligible on the NHS so I have to pay.

CKBJ · 08/09/2020 18:57

Have a paid for vaccine every year and booked into local pharmacy next week. Earlier than normal but saw an available appointment and took it

Walkley18 · 08/09/2020 22:28

If you have it for the first time do you get any symptoms? Thinking of paying to get jab so if have future high temp it eliminates flu as a possibility, but don't want to bring symptoms on after a jab!

Mindymomo · 09/09/2020 14:57

I’ve never had any problems, some people get a sore arm for a day or so.

Butteredbagette · 09/09/2020 15:04

I'm never sure about the flu vaccine as I get migraines and I hear it can trigger a flare up.

QueenPaws · 09/09/2020 15:34

Never had any issues and my immune system is shot. Sore arm one year and that's it

questionssquestions · 09/09/2020 15:37

My toddler and I are getting one this week. Have an exact time slot at GP (each slot is 3 mins). You come in at your exact time. Mask on for adults. Don't touch anything. Socially distanced queue. Leave by the back door. Simple.

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 15:46

I am booked in already to get mine in 2.5 weeks time. I am pregnant. It will be in the GP on a Saturday, very much a conveyor belt situation from the sounds of it.

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 15:47

Just so you know, you can still get flu after having the flu jab. There are many different strains. The jab just fights against the main strains from last year. Any new strains or rare strains arent covered by the jab.
ancientgran · 09/09/2020 16:54

They've knocked three big holes in the local surgery, hope they get doors on soon. So there is going to be 2 entrances and 2 exits instead of 1 entrance/exit. They are rushing this for flu jabs starting next week. I get mine on the 19th.

ancientgran · 09/09/2020 16:57

I've never had a problem with flu jab, one year due to lots going on I had it on 24th December. The nurse asked if I was worried it would ruin Christmas, the power of positive thinking! As usual I was fine so hoping this year is the same. Last year I had the pneumonia jab at the same time and had a little bit of inflammation at the site of the jab but nothing serious.

Walkley18 · 09/09/2020 17:04

Many thanks for the reassurances and the note of caution about different strains. I'll see if I can book a jab in a few weeks.
