Coronavirus- working at a school

Hey, I've just discovered I'm 5 weeks pregnant and I am worried about my workplace, I'm a teacher and I work with multiple special needs students. The school has good hand sanitizers , provided staff with face shields (but majority doesn't wear them) and one way system. However I still feel at unease even though I haven't told the school yet of my news. One of my students has mentioned casually that he s off to all you can eat buffet with SEVEN sets of families getting together. Wondering if it's safe for me.to work in the school?

I think you should think about it in terms of "is it safe for you to catch cv" rather than "is it safe to return to work". Maybe you could speak to your gp about this. Also think about your alternatives if you do stop work.

Your school will have to do a RA for you. You can boost your protection by ventilating your classroom well. Also keep distance from other staff, staff-staff transmission seems to be a big factor in schools.

maternityaction.org.uk/advice/health-and-safety-during-pregnancy-and-on-return-to-work/

This is a good resource - about halfway down the page is info in regards to covid.

@Porcupineinwaiting most classrooms don’t have the windows to be well-ventilated.

Royal college of obstetrics and midwifery have said you are at no great risk of covid during pregnancy as to anyone else.

I know it’s early days but I would tell your employer. You have different rights and are protected a little more once you tell them.

Oh and congratulations!

@LividLaughLovely maybe at your school but that's not the same round here.

I have just had my midwife appointment and she said i am not allowed to be on site at my school when i am 28 weeks pregnant and that i will have to work from home or come to some sort of arrangement with my school. Otherwise, just wear PPE, keep a distance from others and IF someone in my school tests positive then i will have to stay at home for 2 weeks....Great. but glad that there are some measures in place to keep my baby safe.
