Managing asthma cough during covid

Hi all,

Looking for advice really. Every year since I was a kid I get a hacking cough as soon as cold season starts. Every. Year. Kids have given me their cold, and sure enough, my cough has started. Embarrassingly it always gets worse when I talk to people e.g. eyes water, can barely breathe etc.

I'm off for a covid test today so that I can at least prove I don't have Covid. Then I'm going to try and see the asthma nurse because I just don't know how I get through winter with everyone thinking I am covid spewing machine.

This can last weeks/months and I have no idea if there is anything medically that can be done. In the past I have been told there isn't anything to stop it. I use Olbas oil in my pillow at night and that seems to control it a bit as the cough is caused by a runny nose running down my throat and tickling.

I was going to get a new humidifier for my office to see if that helps, although it tends to make the carpet soggy. It is also partly psychological. Every time I am in a situation where it is totally inappropriate to cough, that is when I end up coughing full pelt!

Luckily I work from home so I am pretty much tucked away from human view most of the time, but that isn't sustainable.

Any hints and tips on how I survive winter without having to lock myself away :-(

I agree with seeing your asthma nurse because a chronic cough suggests that your asthma is not well controlled. They might be able to offer different / stronger medication.
I say this as someone with asthma who has had a cough for 20 years. Only last year I finally found out it wasn't asthma causing it it was bronchiectasis.
