Would you have tested for this?

Yesterday toddler DC had a slight fever. So we duly trooped off to be tested. By mid afternoon the fever was gone. No other symptoms. No one else in the house has had any symptoms. This morning there is still no fever. And no results.

Now everyone has to miss school and work because a 2 year old had a slight fever for approx 5 hours.

I will of course self isolate until we get the results but I don’t see how this could possibly be COVID. Are we really going to have to do this all winter? We will never go anywhere. And sticking that test stick up a 2 year old’s nose was bloody awful. Sad

There's no reason why it "couldn't" be COVID - remember there's a range of severity of symptoms, including none at all.
You're doing the right thing, hard though it is.

But statistically, it probably isn't.

Peasbewithyou · 07/09/2020 09:12

Thanks @Augustbreeze. I have been starting to feel like maybe I jumped the gun. A few friends just saying I should send the kids in because everyone is fine and symptoms were so minor and fleeting!

I won’t though because I am a rule follower and if I want everyone else to follow the rules then I must too!

DD is missing her first ever day of school. Sad

No I think you did the right thing.
This is just the eayvlife has to be for now sadly.

Bol87 · 07/09/2020 10:56

When you say slight fever, what was it? Under 38 is not a fever. I wouldn’t be testing for anything under it. My DD has a really snotty cold & was 37.1 on Friday, up from her usual 36.6 but my GP told me that was simply her body reacting to being a bit under the weather & fighting it off.

It’s tough with kids. I know my first would get random few hour fevers when younger. No obvious reason & right as reign after some calpol! But sadly, over 38 & you should really test! It is unlikely corona though without any other symptoms & a very quick recovery! Fingers crossed!

I wouldn't notice a slight fever if that was only symptom. So I wouldn't have thought to get it tested.

I'm going to have a nightmare over the winter. Even just with colds and bugs I regularly spike fevers of up to 42 degrees. My GP says that my immune system is a beast and just reacts aggressively to everything but its going to make my life a pita if I have to get tested every time.

Spinakker · 07/09/2020 12:09

My 5 year old had a raised temp yesterday of 37.8. He was lethargic and sleeping on the sofa in the afternoon and complaining of head ache. We've just had the covid test and all the family are isolating until we get the result. He seems almost completely fine today so I did wonder if I jumped the gun too. But we've got to be responsible about this. Worst case scenario you sent him to nursery or wherever and then someone passed it on to a vulnerable relative. You'd be responsible for their death ultimately. It's better to be safe and protect others.

Peasbewithyou · 07/09/2020 21:52

Thanks everyone. His temp was 38.2 once but only 37.6 the other handful of times I tested him.

In the end we got results back mid morning so I took DD in for at least part of her day.

I am not looking forward to repeating this scenario but I think we will be lucky to get through the month without needing another test! Sad

How did you manage to get tested? Website said try again in a few hours at 3 pm and again at 5 pm. Since 8.30 repeatedly says loading. Been in a queue on 119 for the last 55 minutes. Slowly losing the will to live!

ThorFull · 07/09/2020 22:05

119 wont be able to help if the website is having issues.
Log back on first thing. You’ll get something same day.
That was my experience anyway. Good luck.

INeedNewShoes · 07/09/2020 22:14

I’ve had DD(3) tested twice now for mild fevers (37.8). It feels ridiculous as usually I don’t think anything of a raised temperature in DD unless its 39ish but I feel that I have to do the tests for these instances or otherwise isolate us for 14 days.

Howslifenow · 07/09/2020 22:25

Well done you. Glad he is ok.

Peasbewithyou · 08/09/2020 12:22

@reader108 when I logged on it said there were 95 slots over the next 5 days available at our local test site, so I guess we were just lucky!? Really hope you get through soon!

Just went without an appointment they were fab sorted in 10 minutes just the waiting now

Trousersareoverrated · 08/09/2020 12:43

A slight temperature that didn’t last long was all my friends 1 yo DD had and she tested positive for Covid. You did the right thing.

Peasbewithyou · 08/09/2020 19:38

That’s good @reader108! When we went they asked if we had already registered or not so I guess they were prepared for people just turning up.

@Trousersareoverrated oooh wow. That’s scary. Good to know that we did the right thing though. Although it means we are definitely going to need to do it again soon I’m sure!
