Annoying school post

Sorry, boring I know but I've looked on the NHS website and the school one and I am trying to clear this in my head.
My son has a sore throat

No temp
Smell and taste ok
No cough

NHS site says it's ok, but I've seen many on here saying he should be tested.
Are parents mostly going by NHS? I don't want to get this wrong for anybody

No sarky comments are needed, yes I could do a search but I'm rushing around and don't have time to browse.
Thankyou for any factual information

Only sore throat, I would not test, and would send to school. The NHS advice is as you have found, just go with that.

BrokenBrit · 07/09/2020 07:18

No the advice is don’t test with a sore throat in U.K. (though it can be a symptom of Covid, and other countries do include it like France), but I would keep him off today and see how it develops.
I think If we can keep on top of colds this year all the better for everyone, and if he does develop a cough or temperature later today then you can get a test.

He's now gone from dying swan to jet packing around the roomConfusedHmm
But that's a good thing! Thanks for replying that's what I thought but I want to get it right for him and the people he's around

I’d be inclined to go by the NHS advice rather than advice on MN to be honest

Cocklepops · 07/09/2020 08:00

Excellent news on the jet packing by the way! 🤗

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 07/09/2020 08:10

I fully agreeGrin but you can usually tell the rational replies from the corona doomers so I think i was just looking for confirmation I was doing the right thing.
That being said I'm terrified of having to do the test on any of my children and I'm dreading the likely event that at some point I'll have to.

Anywhere else he’d need a test, but in the U.K. we’re not testing for that so you don’t need to. Perhaps just keep a close eye on him.

ceeveebee · 07/09/2020 08:19

My DD has a snotty nose and starting with a sore throat, and temp up a little bit but not fever. I’ve decided to keep her off today and will monitor her temp. Not treating it as “symptoms” though as genuinely don’t think it is, but don’t want her blowing her nose all day and worrying the teacher...

whirlwindwallaby · 07/09/2020 08:25

Our school has said only the three main symptoms, unless too unwell to go to school.

SockYarn · 07/09/2020 09:24

We've been back a few weeks now (Scotland) and half the school has snotty noses and sore throats, my kids included. Haven;t had them tested, some other parents have and none have tested positive for Covid. It's just the usual "back to school" cold or bug that they get every year.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 07/09/2020 20:37

Ok. He's now in bed and I can start to hear intermittent coughing, typical of a cold. He's got sneezes and a runny nose.
The info from school says he must be off for seven days and he must get tested.
Regardless of the result he cannot go back for seven days
However does that now mean if he gets a negative result (he will) that we must all still isolate?
My heads all over the place at the moment, we've had a lot going on and I've lost touch with a lot of the guidelines

OP posts:
iamtheoneandonlyyy · 07/09/2020 20:40

I wouldn't call it a continuos cough but the way. More that he's lying down in bed now and it's irritating him.
But if he went to school and they heard it they'd send him home I'm sure

I know we are all in this together (Hmm) but it is hard not to resent the children having to go longer being held at home when they've had a taste of freedom.

Bramblespoint · 07/09/2020 20:51

If it's not a continuous cough you probably don't need a test.

If it was me, I would get him tested then you can say he's got a cold but has had negative test.

School should allow him back if he's tested negative - that's the government's guidance so not sure why yours are saying he needs to be off for 7 days Confused

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 07/09/2020 21:19

That's my thinking to be honest. He's actually stopped now Hmm
Yes they have sent out a chart and no matter what they say isolate for seven days regardless of results.
Mind you at least if it's negative his sister could still do things. I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a little update for anyone desperate for it (Grin)
He had one day off and was fine.
I started coughing last night so now we are all home anyway and I've ordered a test for me. Order went straight through as well

Side note I think the letter from school was a misprint and they have corrected it. Negative test means fine to return now
