Are you still queuing for food?

Maybe I am just spoilt or have a massive sense of entitlement, but we are still queueing for food at our local supermarket and it is giving me the rage. I have to stand there in a mask for 20 mins to half an hour before I even get into the shop. I can go really early but they won't let me in as it is NHS/ pensioners. Usually there is no one in the shop this early butt they still won't let me in because I can pass germs to the elderly apparently.

I thought we had moved on a bit. Is this still the way or has my local supermarket not got the recent memos? Just to add apparently the shop is not doing well at the moment. Perhaps let more people in?

Local high street shops ie. bakery & butcher, still queuing. Supermarkets, not at all since face masks were introduced.

Candyflosscookie · 07/09/2020 10:44

Very occasional small queue at local M&S Food, they have a staff member with a counting clicker at the door. Only at peak after work picking up a ready meal time though. It moves quite fast.

Nowhere else. As soon as masks were brought in, local Tesco couldn't give a shit, no more controls and it was rammed. Yuk.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 07/09/2020 10:50

If I have to queue then I go elsewhere.

cheerfulcoconut · 07/09/2020 11:01

Generally, no queuing. Although I live near a large secondary school and a small Tesco Metro. Last week at just after 3.30 there was a queue, because of all the kids. They flock there after school, so there was a staff member marshalling the queue. I made a mental note long ago to avoid that shop at school kicking out time. It's fine the rest of the time.

Stellaris22 · 07/09/2020 11:36

I work in a small, local food store and we still limit people.

I can honestly say the queues are due to customers casually strolling through the aisles and browsing with no intent to purchase half of the things they look at. If we ask people to complete their shop we get called rude, queuing customers complain. We can't win.

It's infuriating for staff as we are aware of the queue but can't let more people in for our safety.

DobbyLovesSocks · 07/09/2020 11:42

No queues here but I don't go food shopping much (once a week if I can help it and I go early)
If you are queuing outside then you don't need to wear a mask until you get into the shop?

The only shops round here that I note still have queues are Wilko and Primark - though Wilko is usually only 2-3 people.

@Lovelydovey

There was a queue outside Sainsbury’s yesterday so I didn’t bother going in - but that was the first queue I’d seen in months.
What time was it? There is always a queue at around 10.15 on Sundays as they wait for the Sunday trading 'browsing time' to start.

No, no queues here for months now (and not that many masks either).

feelingverylazytoday · 07/09/2020 11:52

It's only some small shops and banks that have queues now. At busy times Sainsbury still have someone on the door monitoring numbers but I guess at quieter times social distancing just kind of occurs naturally now.

lurker101 · 07/09/2020 11:55

No queues here (Waitrose, M&S, huge Sainsbury’s, small Sainsbury’s, small Tesco) and there hasn’t been since about mid April, but there is still a queue at one of the whole foods I walk past (wouldn’t queue for it)

innitbloodysuper · 07/09/2020 11:57

I had to queue at the Tesco's in Filey (East Yorkshire) last week, but that's possibly because it's a tourist town and there were no other "big" supermarkets locally.

LynetteScavo · 07/09/2020 17:10

Occasionally at Sainsbury's, but the queue moves quickly because it's a large store.
I had to queue at Aldi for about 10 minutes yesterday.

During lockdown I was shopping at M&S for food as it was the only place with no queue.

I was more annoyed about queuing for Oliver Bonas than Aldi, because that type of shooing is supposed to be enjoyable, where as food shopping is a necessity.

Hailtomyteeth · 07/09/2020 17:15

Morrisons Rochdale had a queue on Saturday morning. I went somewhere else.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 07/09/2020 17:17

Not generally.

museumum · 07/09/2020 17:20

Not queued at a supermarket since about june. Sometimes have to at a minimart or local baker/butcher/cheese shop but that's cause it's counter service so makes no difference if you queue inside or outside to the time it takes to be served.

BackforGood · 07/09/2020 17:43

Aldi still has a queue at random times.
It does mean there is space inside though, which is nice, unlike some other places - Morrisons particularly - who have been making no attempt at controlling numbers since June or July.

We have loads of supermarkets with about 3 miles of where I am though, so if the queue is long, then I go elsewhere except Morrisons as I don't really want to be in a crowded indoor place and queuing at a till

puffinkoala · 07/09/2020 18:40

My DH said he had to queue to get into Waitrose the other day, but only for a minute or so.

In recent weeks the only place with a queue has been the post office, and I suppose the queue would normally be inside, so no difference in actual waiting time.

Parker231 · 07/09/2020 18:44

Queues at most of the smaller shops every weekend and also in the big Tesco’s on Sunday.

Oblomov20 · 07/09/2020 18:45

No. I only queued 3 times, in the very early stages. I just refuse to. No queuing here for many months.

I haven’t seen a queue outside a supermarket for weeks. In fact given the virus is still in circulation and numbers are now rising I’ve been wondering why supermarkets appear to have completely given up controlling numbers and are completely relying on people wearing masks. Masks were supposed to be in addition to social distancing and some people don’t wear them.

SaskiaRembrandt · 08/09/2020 05:33

I haven't queued for months. The only place I ever see a queue is outside my local chip shop, but that was the case pre-covid because it's very small but very popular - only fits three people without social distancing.

SaskiaRembrandt · 08/09/2020 05:34

Also, why are you wearing a mask if you're standing outside, you only need to out it on when you actually go into the shop. Are you in the UK?

SallyCylicAcid · 08/09/2020 05:36

I drove past Waitrose and there was a huge queue but we've been shopping at Aldi where there hasn't been one for ages (and the nice wine is £3.99 Grin)

Peony9876 · 08/09/2020 05:42

There was a queue outside waitrose monday at 10am. It took about 10 minutes. When I got in there was barely anyone in the shop, maybe 1 person in every other isle. It sermed a bit over cautious. I would definitely avoid at the weekend.

I went in john lewis without a queue and it was empty. There were signs everywherr that their stock had bern diverted to online. Pretty depressing really and made me wonder why they even bothered opening.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/09/2020 06:03

I’ve queued twice since March.
