Does a covid temp come down with paracetamol?

My 15 month old has been off his food and was quite unsettled and had a temp of 38.6 before bed. Gave calpol which brought it down to 37 range, but just been in to check on him and it's back at 38.6. Again calpol has now brought it down to 38.

I will book a test for him in the morning - just wondering if anyone knows if the covid fever goes up and down in response to paracetamol?

Yes in the same way as any fever. Still book a test though. Hope he feels better soon

Until you have a positive test it is not a covid fever so just treat like a normal one, even then it might help

Thanks for the replies. I've booked him a test at the drive in centre at 10 this morning

All fever can be reduced by paracetamol.

Hope he's well again soon.

Hope he feels better. A fever is part of the body's response to infection. Regarding giving paracetamol- treat the child, not the fever.

His temp is now 39.4, not eating, I've looked in his mouth and I can see an ulcer on his tongue so it might be something else.

Oo ulcer on the tongue could be hand/foot/mouth.. poor baba. That’s a high temp bless him. Hope he’s on the mend really soon 🙏🏼

Get a test, but as above I was told by the hospital for my boy to treat him rather than worrying about the fever as such. If he's feeling bad then give paracetamol and ibuprofen (pace them out so you get good 24-hr coverage), but if he's coping ok then let the fever do its thing of killing off virus.

A blister could be hand foot and mouth, a GP can check (even photo / video call). If it is then buy Difflam spray - magic for reducing pain in the throat and really helped my boy. A little anbesol liquid can be numbing as well.

We are just back from the GP, poor thing has tonsillitis. He's been given antibiotics and painkillers, and I have a difflam spray too. GP said he's 99.999% sure that's what is causing the temp but he still had the covid test to be sure.

So the GP did a test? That's interesting, many on here would think that's completely wrong!

fee1234 · 07/09/2020 13:36

No I went to our local drive in test facility at 10 and his GP appointment was at 11.45. Hopefully get the result in a day or two

Take his clothes off just leave on nappy , but on his favourite tv , and see if you can but a old fashioned wet folded flannel on his fore head, and maybe round the back of his neck. Give him plenty of water. Sounds like tonsillitis to me. Hope you get a negative Covid result.

fee1234 · 07/09/2020 13:50

Thank you, his temp was still up at 38.8 at the GP. Tried to syringe 5ml of penicillin into him which made him sick, might see if they can prescribe a stronger dose that I can give in smaller amounts. Hope he doesn't pass it to my 7 week old

Poor boy. You can try just 1ml, then wait 5 min or so and another 1ml. Just count the dose timing from the end of the last dose.

MRex · 07/09/2020 14:10

(And hope he feels better soon!)

Jrobhatch29 · 07/09/2020 14:28

Ah my friends daughter has been in A&E two days in a row with tonsillitis. She's so poorly, and her mouth is covered in ulcers. Hope your little one feels better soon

fee1234 · 07/09/2020 14:54

Thank you all I've just picked up the stronger penicillin so I only need to give 2.5ml at a time which will make a huge difference! Poor thing he had this at 9 months too.

Covid test was negative, email came through at 11 so 13 hours turnaround.

Temp went up to 40.3 later this afternoon and he was shivering, called GP back who sent us to paediatric ward to get him checked over. Ibuprofen brought temp back down, he's drinking milk and ate a few crisps so I'm just keeping a close eye on him.

Calpol didn’t ever bring the temperature of my youngest but ibuprofen always did. It’s awful when they are so little and unwell.
