My son is due back tomorrow just had an email saying mask should be worn around the school but not in class rooms.
Its very last minute and the year 11s went back last week and they didn't have them. Today they have reported 10 cases in the town and classed it has a spike do you think that's why they want masks tomorrow.

I've heard this has been implemented in other secondaries too - and I'm not in a local lockdown areas...

HateIsNotGood · 06/09/2020 21:10

Who knows - the guidance from ds's FE College (post GCSE) has stated for weeks that masks should be worn in all indoor areas, not yet in the classrooms; and other measures.

I'm more surprised your ds's school have only just thought of this as it's rather short notice if you were expecting otherwise.

We're in a very low infection area, long may it be so, so no 'spikes' to explain the masks here, just pretty good forward planning.

This is the case in my DD's school -- they're expected to wear face coverings while moving through the building, and it's optional in the classroom. We're not in lockdown, but I guess all schools are facing different circumstances and are trying to minimize the risk as much as possible.

My son’s school brought it in last minute too, announced 36 hours before they went back last week. We are in a low case area, but I guess they may have decided it was easier to have the rule in place from the start of the year than to have to introduce it later

Qasd · 06/09/2020 21:20

Our area has very low cases and is saying masks in the communal areas. I think the idea of easier to start that way Than introduce later if cases spike seems sensible although odd yours is so last minute we were told a week ago (Also start tomorrow)

tootyfruitypickle · 06/09/2020 21:26

Our school has masks as optional, but we are very lucky as all the classroom moves are via outside . The dining hall is the only indoor area, and they are doing staggered lunches, so I guess it will depend how that works in reality as to whether masks are brought in while queuing if some bubble crossover .

My DC secondary want them in masks in social spaces...we are not in a lockdown area

Sadless · 06/09/2020 22:45

I am surprised of the little short notice but I suppose if they make it a routine now it will be easier from the kids to get use to it.

I can imagine a lot of kids getting send home for not wearing one.

No masks at our school

Elephantday82 · 06/09/2020 23:03

My kids too, just in the common areas not the clsssrooms. My son has been out a few times to Town with his friends and lost his mask every time. I think I’m going to have to send him with about 5!

icelolly99 · 07/09/2020 11:26

If your childs school is holding Information evenings for Parents, have you been asked to wear a face covering? Ours hasn't asked but surely this type or meeting should follow the same rules as churches, libraries, museums, shops etc. Be good to hear others opinions/experience of this.

Why? Do you think parents won't provide masks?

I'm in Scotland, they are wearing masks.

Nonagoninfinity · 07/09/2020 13:53

Can you grab some disposable ones from the supermarket as a stop gap?

We found out last week from the school (low infection area) but following Bojo's statement the week before (that it would be up to schools to decide), I'd already ordered some from our local Facebook page.

Sadless · 07/09/2020 16:23

I think children will get sent home for refusing to wear one not because parents well some parents. Theres a lot of people who are in to conspiracies and think it's government control.

It's not happening here. They have been told they have to wear a mask so they wear a mask.

Just had a message from school reminding parents to send children in with masks and my son has is hes very strict with things.
