New persistent cough in a hotel

We’ve come to a hotel today to attend a family do tomorrow, it’s about 4 hours drive from home but we came here by public transport. DS has developed a persistent cough, I’ve only noticed it since we came up to our room Tonight but he says he’s had it since we got here but has been coughing discretely into his elbow. He does tend to get a bad chest in winter particularly when he’s lying down in bed (like now) - to the extent his granny thought we should get him assessed for asthma last winter - but what should we do? Isolate in our room if he still has it tomorrow morning when he gets out of bed? Will we have to stay here for a fortnight (min) if he tests positive (will cost a fortune and were down a lot of money because of Covid as it is)? it feels weird to be thinking about this, it really seems to have got worse since he went to bed which I’ve noticed happens to him most winters...hopefully it goes when he gets up in the morning...

Give him antihistamine, see if it helps. Sounds like allergy to me, it affects mine like this.

They are going to see family with old age. At least they should be protected.
@EasterIsland where have you been since March? People refer to the action of cleaning with wipes, soap and water and bleach as 'antibac' all the time. Anti-virus cleaner doesn't have the same ring. Some antibac wipes actually state they kill the virus too.
I must have been worried about a virus and reading the news about people buying hand gels or wipes that actually don’t kill the virus cuz don’t have the right materials to kill the virus.

Also news say virus can stay in some superficies for days. Yet here some people are suggesting that with airing the place for a few hours will be enough.

So since March ... I must have been in my own cave. Sorry.

@im5050

Could be air con in hotel I stay in hotels regularly as in 4-7 days twice a month and always got a sore throat cough Since lockdown I have been working from home and not had a single cough or sore throat Last week I had to spend two nights in a hotel - sore throat and cough began pretty much straight away I swear it’s the air con in the hotels that do this to me
I’ve had this as well. Since March wfh no throat ache. Last week went on holiday and on day 2 I had achy throat that lasted for a day or so

Anti bac gel has been recommended from the start. Why do you think it was like gold dust for months. It's been delivered to schools and work places in vats. Why would they do that if it was ineffective. At first the likes of dettol spray could not 100% claim that it killed this virus as it was novel and hadn't been tested but they did say it was likely as it killed all other coronavirus. Anti bac is just whats it's refereed time and is not way limited to

He stopped coughing as soon as he fell asleep And there hasn’t been a peep all night. Strange, I wonder did he just get himself worked up once I started paying lots of attention to the cough.

The hotel you’re staying in should have a procedure of what to do if you or any of your party develops symptoms when you are there. You should contact reception if it’s a NEW persistent cough, temp, loss of taste/smell. Sounds like in your partners case it’s an allergy

picklemewalnuts · 06/09/2020 09:06

Take him outside for some fresh air, see what happens then. If it's hotel related, it should settle down. It could have been dust mites on the public transport. DS is so much better now he doesn't use the school bus!

Sounds like he has cold.

Once you start paying attention to a cough it almost always gets worse. If he isn't coughing whilst asleep, then it isn't a persistent cough. No temp and if he can taste and smell I think the chances of him having covid are minimal.

The guidelines are 3 coughing episodes in a 24 hour period or having a cough for 1 hour, the fact he isn't coughing now means nothing - if he fulfilled either of those and it is a new cough (a cough last year around the same time does not erase the fact this is a new cough).
