Covid vocabulary

Just thinking about this time last year I would never have needed to write or speak a sentence with the word 'furlough' in it. Was this word used readily in any sector pre covid? So many new phrases and words that we've seamlessly become familiar with.

And dementors.

bumblingbovine49 · 06/09/2020 08:22

Isn't furlough used in the US for soldiers on .leave?. I might be wrong but I have a dim recollection of - but haven't bothered to Google it yetGrin

soloula · 06/09/2020 08:35

Symptomatic/asymptomatic too

I'm studying English so I've found the language side of things fascinating - how quickly words we'd barely heard before or that would have been the preserve of experts have just been adopted as part of our day to day vocab.

Findahouse21 · 06/09/2020 08:37

At the begining, I didn't hear any government statement that didn't use the word unprecedented in every single sodding sentence

PrivateD00r · 06/09/2020 08:37

I don't know if its just used here in NI or right across the UK, but lately I keep hearing about 'wet pubs' and it makes my skin crawl (pubs that don't serve food, still not allowed to open here).

Key worker is definitely the worst though!

The New Normal

middleager · 06/09/2020 08:41

annabel I came on to write the same thing.

Socially distanced is another.

MagpiePi · 06/09/2020 08:43

'unprecedented times' and 'new normal' set my teeth on edge

Wet Pubs! Not heard that one but agree it's awful.

@PrivateD00r
'Wet pub' makes me feel queasy. No help here about how widespread the term is because I'm in NI too. But my FIL mentioned wet pubs a few weeks ago and I nearly laughed in his face because I thought he was getting mixed up as he's teetotal and has never gone into pubs. Now I seem to hear the phrase all the time.

Excess deaths
Active travel
Face covering

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 06/09/2020 08:48

Unprecedented
New normal
Face covering
Bubble
"Socially distanced, of course"
Captain Tom (luckily that's all gone away)
Clap for carers was massively annoying but that died a death just as I was getting really sick of it

The most annoying thing is all the people who are wallowing in the doom and gloom and loving the rules.

mrshoho · 06/09/2020 09:01

'Drive through test centre' is another one that has become a normal activity. Prior to covid the only drive through test centres I could have imagined would have been MOT tests for cars.

TheDrsDocMartens · 06/09/2020 10:27

Socially distanced 😬😬😬😬

Somebody called it "The Corona" on Gogglebox Hmm
mrshoho · 06/09/2020 13:19

I heard teenage daughter's friend calling it Aunty Rona the other day. Eyebrows raised at that one!

Let’s not forget the delightful ‘dick noses’.

Zoom as the latest version of a brand name becoming both a noun and a verb

Spidey66 · 06/09/2020 18:39

I had never ever heard the word furloughed before.

Zoom! Yes zoom calls and zoom meetings. A big part of my life since March but unheard of pre covid!

Not so bad and probably familiar for most scientists, but

The rainbows in windows and ‘thank you NHS and Key Workers’ banners.

I’m very thankful for all they’ve done and continue to do, but isn’t it time they came down now? Or at least had a little break?!
