... for travel reasons, has anyone official checked up on you?

MRex · 05/09/2020 16:35

@JPduck - Spain has 9.1% test positivity rating and is logging almost 9000 new cases per day within that. You are about 80 times more likely to come across someone with covid today than in the UK. Focus on numbers rather than feelings.

MRex · 05/09/2020 16:35

*today in Spain that should say...

Keepyourginup · 05/09/2020 18:24

Yes, but Spain are actually testing. I don't know anyone in the UK that has had a test. And why aren't the UK testing people who are coming back from these 'hot spots'?

MRex · 05/09/2020 18:41

@Keepyourginup - False. Spain has currently increased its testing to 1.5 tests per 1000 people per day, UK is currently testing 2.5 people per 1000 people per day.

Why are some of you not just looking up information before you dive in with all these wildly incorrect statements? It's publicly available information for both countries and comparable on various public global data sites.

Keepyourginup · 05/09/2020 18:59

The fact that I don't know anyone who has been tested is not 'wildly incorrect'. Neither is the fact that UK are not testing arrivals from 'hot spots'. Well done on your knowledge of testing rates though.

UntamedWisteria · 05/09/2020 19:09

I have been tested, so has DH and both my parents at various times for various reasons over the past couple of months.

I know many others who have too. All have been negative.

DS has just returned from a hotspot & is on his way to be tested right now. Not going to be quarantined though (unless he gets a positive result) as we're in England.

Unless people book their own tests.

OP posts:
Keepyourginup · 05/09/2020 19:40

There was no information saying we could request a test and we were not asked to - I wasn't even asked to show my passenger locator/contact form on arrival in UK. I've just looked up now how to get a test and the government website says you can request a test if you have symptoms - none of us do.

MRex · 05/09/2020 19:50

There's no point getting a test without symptoms unless you've had known contact with a covid case or are needed for surveillance reporting. If you've come from a hot spot, you're supposed to quarantine. A negative test can't be relied on without symptoms, negative on day 2 means nothing because you might get it on day 7.

UntamedWisteria · 05/09/2020 20:02

Yes, DS is having 2 tests - a second one 6 days later.

About half of young people who have tested positive have been asymptomatic,

This is an odd statement. I don't go around telling everyone I have been tested, perhaps your acquaintances don't either? Confused
MRex · 05/09/2020 20:57

@Keepyourginup
"Yes, but Spain are actually testing."
Nowhere near as much as the UK, that's a false narrative I responded on that give conveniently dropped
"I don't know anyone in the UK that has had a test."
Out of 17.6m tests, you don't know anyone. You know no care home workers, no medical workers, nobody who's been unwell in months - bollocks. You may be unaware that people you know have been tested, but that's rarher different
"And why aren't the UK testing people who are coming back from these 'hot spots'?"
They are, when they have symptoms. Until then people are asked to quarantine. It's been in the news, you'll have seen it. I answered your question about "why"; you clearly didn't read it so I'll try different words - it's because a test taken too early gives a false negative, you'd be infectious but roaming about thinking you're fine. Now do your quarantine period so that you don't risk infecting people you know.

Nat6999 · 05/09/2020 23:54

Why aren't the government doing tests for anyone passing through so called hotspots in the UK? Anyone could decide to have a day at the Trafford Centre, yes you wear mask in the shops & malls, but if you have a meal in the restaurants or diners you don't have to wear a mask, nor do you in the outdoor areas. Most of the countries that are classed as hotshots have only got more recorded cases because they have targeted testing where it is needed & have been stricter on locking down areas, here anyone can float in & out of a high infection area, you could live in one but work outside or the other way round, high infection rates should mean nobody goes in or out of the area to contain the outbreak. Ds friend came back from Malta two weeks before school started, they had 4 phone calls to check they weren't breaking their quarantine, if checks aren't being done on everyone, what is the point?

IndiaMay · 06/09/2020 09:39

I'm surprised you dont know anyone who has been tested! I just did a tally in my head roughly and I know 13 people who have been tested and tbh I dont know many people at all. My OH gets tested weekly.

3rdNamechange · 06/09/2020 10:04

Did 14 days no one contacted me.

??

Why isn't he going to quarantine when coming back from a HoSpot?

A negative test now doesn't mean anything.

AmelieTaylor · 06/09/2020 10:12

HOT SPOT!

Though arguably he should be tested either way 🤣

Aragog · 06/09/2020 10:21

Friends finished their two weeks quarantine three days ago. There weren't contacted at all during that time.

Bil was in quarantine due to track and trace - finished this weekend. No contact behind the initial notification.

chocolatviennois · 06/09/2020 11:00

France appears to have far more daily cases than the UK at the moment yet there have been more new hospital admissions With covid in the UK than France. This makes me wonder if there are a lot of undetected cases in the Uk at the moment?

UntamedWisteria · 06/09/2020 13:34

AmelieTaylor Because quarantine is not mandatory from that particular hotspot in England, although it is in other parts of the UK.

He is, however voluntarily self-isolating until he gets the results of his 2nd Covid test.

Because he's a responsible young man.

OP posts:
MRex · 06/09/2020 15:38

What symptoms does he have?

AmandaHoldensLips · 06/09/2020 15:51

Day 10 here. Nothing. No contact, reminder or anything.
Border controls on entering the UK were non-existent.

While travelling earlier this year outside UK was full-on checking with thermal imaging, spot-checking and high visibility of staff.

UK border controls are shockingly lax.

DuckonaBike · 06/09/2020 15:56

Yes, just finished 14 days quarantine (hurrah!). We kept all the rules but nobody checked. I guess they’re just relying on people to be law abiding, which most people are generally.

UntamedWisteria · 06/09/2020 16:37

What symptoms does he have?

None at the moment. 50% of people in his age group who have tested positive have been asymptomatic.

OP posts:
MRex · 06/09/2020 16:52

He should not be using up testing capacity in that case, particularly not twice. There are people with actual symptoms who are struggling to get a slot because of people like your son getting unnecessary tests.
It's very clear who should and should not be tested on the NHS site, please suggest that he reads it: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-a-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/.
