School kids eating outside

Parents livid after schoolchildren made to eat outside in the rain www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/theyre-treating-kids-like-animals-18871993

Not my dcs' school but I raised the issue in the summer of where mine would eat if it was bad weather. I was told they didn't know! Year 7 has priority to eat inside if it rains but otherwise they all have to eat outside. Bloody ridiculous. I don't have solutions as the day isn't long enough to have 5 years groups of over 300 each eating in 2 canteens.

Seeing as there's no social distancing anywhere in school it seems a bit pointless anyway to be making them uncomfortable outside in this weeks wind and rain. Imagine January and eating outside? Ffs

They may do better but simply being cold can’t give them to you.

Cold weather can reduce your immune response. Making you more susceptible to illness.

In addition some viruses do better in terms of replicating in cold dry weather.

If you suffer from bronchial illnesses or asthma cold weather can make things worse.

phonez · 04/09/2020 21:52

Especially important to keep your nose warm.

Studies have shown that viruses will enter and replicate more if you have a cold nose.
Harvard study backs this up.

Not in uk but here children eat packed lunch in classroom and teacher supervises. Then they go out to play on yard and teacher is on a rota for duty so I'm on one week in 4 to supervise. Obviously a primary school secondary different.

In forest schools everything is done outside. The Scandinavians say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.
I think it’s healthiest for kids to be outside as much as possible this year, but they will need hats , gloves and good coats.
Let the kids outside !

PerspicaciaTick · 04/09/2020 22:05

At DDs school they are expected to take packed lunches, although hot take away lunches can be pre-ordered. Lunches are eaten as picnics in the form rooms.

PablosHoney · 04/09/2020 22:08

Yes but it still can’t simply give you a cold 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ashard20 · 04/09/2020 22:25

There may well be enough classrooms where they could eat, but possibly not enough welfare staff to spread across those rooms.

phonez · 05/09/2020 13:32

Air in a green forest area is completely different to say London concrete jungle type school - you can't really compare Scandinavia air with here.

But yes people can learn to dress better for the elements.

year5teacher · 05/09/2020 14:14

I’ve lost half my lunch break to have my class eating in the classroom with me supervising.

I feel like there’s no “correct” solution.

CallmeAngelina · 05/09/2020 15:24

I wonder how many of the posters complaining about their kids being cold outside are the same ones who were advocating back in the spring that to get schools open fully for summer and beyond, they should provide gazebos and marquees.

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2020 15:26

Eating outside when it’s cold isn’t as much an issue as when it’s pouring with rain. Although it sounds a bit miserable if it’s not clear and sunny.

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2020 15:27

Obviously cloudy isn’t so bad but imagining a very windy winter’s day, not just rain.

CallmeAngelina · 05/09/2020 15:29

Schools needed to open. This is part of that (new normal) reality.

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2020 15:58

I hadn’t thought about this. School letter just says eat in bubbles and time for outdoor play. No idea if eating inside. Although packed lunch in a new paper bag each day 🙈

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2020 16:04

Although they do have extra cleaning during the day which sounded pretty good considering

I don't think I ever posted about marquees Smile but in this context they seem sensible. It would be a way of getting more space and so social distancing. And it would keep the rain off, if kids have to eat lunch outside.
CallmeAngelina · 05/09/2020 16:26

And the cold winter temperatures on the horizon?

The context at the time of the suggestions was that lessons should be held in them all day/every day.

Hackney Forest school. This place is for under 8’s l think but looks healthy. Not everywhere has land to do such a thing but l love the idea of kids being outdoors as often as possible.
