Staying near Cardiff - how busy is it this week?

we have been shielding and have been lent a house near Cardiff

Its Dh's birthday tomorrow and I want to do something nice but I think the castle and Barry Island may be too buay for us to visit yet

Has anyone been this week - what is it like? Mad busy? Or pretty calm and spaced out ?

The Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais has just reopened. So has the Ty Mawr in Lisvane, which has a spectacular view of Cardiff (and right to the Severn Bridge on a good day).

@iolaus

My daughter works in a hotel in Cardiff Bay - she said last week and the weekend it was stupidly busy, but yesterday very quiet
I went to the Bay for food last night and was surprised how busy it was!

Caerphilly castle is nice and there was a nice pub think it’s called The Black Cock inn near there. Hay on Wye is also a lovely little town if you like bookshops and like a drive up there.
There’s also the Travellers Rest on the top of Caerphilly mountain.

Hay is a good hour from Newport.

@Murinae

13 mins in the car
Yes, I live near Llanerch and commute past St Fagans.

I think we have different ideas about what constitutes “close”!

I live in Cardiff and tbh, the population is so small that if you are walking about it is never really that busy! Its one of the things I have really noticed since moving to Wales, just how few people there are!

Murinae · 02/09/2020 20:25

I’ll have to note down all these recommended pubs I haven’t tried yet Smile

Ha ha
The Plymouth arms was my cousins son’s local
Met him many times there
You’re at the wrong side of Cardiff but porthkerry country park is lovely and I love the physic garden in cowbridge

I am in Caerphilly and I have never seen so many cars. Local pub car parks are full

LioneIRichTea · 03/09/2020 08:28

Castell Coch is beautiful.

My son works in a hotel in Cardiff bay too! He says it is very busy at the moment. Everywhere we have tried to go is full.
Murinae · 03/09/2020 10:15

There’s the big pit. Think most of that is indoors but I’ve never been and no idea if it’s open again. St David’s shopping centre in Cardiff is all undercover if you like huge shopping centres and Castell Coch is mostly undercover/indoors too

KatyMac · 03/09/2020 10:38

Ok we are staying in and heading off for a late lunch, not decided where yet

Still looking at all your recommendations

Thanks everyone xx
