She says no masks for children at all without a medical reason and a doctor's note Hmm

She says the Dfe are v clear about masks in primary - but I think it's an arbitrary rule based on age, not physiplogy . My Y6 dd is as tall as me and so are a couple of her friends!

Ours said no masks in school at all. If you bring them in a mask you need to take it off at the gate and take it away with you.
My son's school masks are optional in communal areas and he wants one

I'm not a teacher, but it's my understanding that heads can make the rules on this. Masks not recommended in the government's guidelines (except in communal areas in secondary schools in lockdown areas- in England anyway). I agree with you though, I think if a child wants to wear a mask they should be allowed to.

My son is in secondary (not a lockdown area, England) - his school is currently taking the line that children can wear them if they want to, but they are not encouraging them, and certainly not mandating them. For secondary schools, I would like to see masks actively encouraged personally.

Seems like an odd and somewhat unnecessary battle to fight. I don't teach in the UK (and our kids aren't required to wear masks in school) but staff have decided that if children want to wear masks, that's ok. Let them at it. Not many are choosing to and those who are are very sensible with it.

Why do you want your child to wear a mask?

Masks aren’t even to protect the wearer. They are supposed to protect others.

I think that it is completely nuts that whatever you 'feel' about this that the government isn't being clear or mandating it one way or another.
The power that has been given to schools to make the decision for their community is crazy - we are in a global pandemic, not a small outbreak of scabies or whatnot.
Neighbouring schools could be very different on this matter, how can that be right?Hmm
Look at many, many countries around the world where kids are in masks, it's fine - kids take the lead from adults... the majority of children would cope perfectly well in masks.
It's not ideal.
Neither is another lockdown or worse, a death in the community from a school cluster.
If it's what it takes to keep schools open then what's the big deal. And yes, there are more and more studies out now to support the facts that masks reduce transmission and even possibly the viral load... it is not really a matter or personal opinion, the science is becoming very clear.
I say this as a teacher of many years experience in U.K. and very recently Asia.

I am so glad that I teach in a primary school with a head who lets anyone wear masks, staff and children. A few staff are. Children back tomorrow.

They probably won't be wearing masks but I don't see the issue if that's what the parents want, provided the child isn't purposely messing around with it.
