Lost smell and taste back in march, family had zero, what does this mean?

So back in march, I had strange stomach. Then about 4 days later lost sense of small and taste. Obviously without testing this probably means I had the virus.

Let's say I did.
I took no precautions in house as it wasn't listed as a symptom. If I had it, but neither dh or dc showed any symptoms what does this mean?

They had it but were asymptomatic?
Would this also mean that '' maybe '' there is a small chance, we have antibodies?

Transmission within households is lower than you might think (which is why people thinking they will catch it from someone walking past in the street is silly). They may have had it asymptomatically, they may not. There's no way of us knowing.

BringBiscuits · 30/08/2020 22:16

Who knows. Friend and her husband had all the symptoms in March and were off work convinced they had it. He works in a hospital so quite possible he’s picked it up but antibodies test came back negative. Either they didn’t have it or antibodies didn’t hang around for long.

formerbabe · 30/08/2020 22:17

Exactly the same happened to me in March. Totally lost my sense of smell for about two weeks...no other symptoms. Dh and dc seemingly unaffected. Watching with interest

Austereorange · 30/08/2020 22:19

Without testing who knows.

My stepmother was unwell as you describe before the guidance changed. And felt generally a bit ‘meh’ but distinctly had no smell or taste. She could sniff vinegar or bleach with no sensation. She lives alone with DF and they distanced accordingly. He had no symptoms at all.

They have both tested positive for antibodies.

Spiderseason · 30/08/2020 22:45

Where are people getting anti body tests from though?.

Suspending the '' we won't know without a test '' surely it's more likely, I had it and they did and there was no symptoms! I'm in bed with dh for goodness sake, a small bed!

Same issue here.
DH lost taste and smell mid March. He’d been out for a meal with someone who had symptoms (actually got quite ill) and has recently been tested positive for antibodies. (He is donating plasma)

So we are pretty certain DH had covid, and recently he’s noticed he has Parosmia (certain things smell horrendous to him but normal to me, there’s been a bbc report about it this week)

I had nothing. No symptoms when he did, am desperate for antibody test! I was 6/7 months pregnant then as well

flissity · 30/08/2020 23:11

@Spiderseason my DH got an appointment to donate his blood plasma (as long as tested positive for antibodies)
But when he got to addenbrokes, he was told his veins not big enough to donate plasma, they wouldn’t risk is as veins could collapse!! So they wouldn’t even do the antibodies test. So frustrating!

Giganticshark · 30/08/2020 23:46

My friend had it confirmed. Her entire family didn't test positive or have symptoms. She was shielding too.... Weird things happen

Spiderseason · 31/08/2020 08:40

Flissity very frustrating they couldn't just test him!

I guess what I am trying to gage is... Have we dodged the bullet, I had it mild, no one else showed symptoms even but must have been exposed... Maybe we are safe?!

DSiL almost certainly had covid 19 (mild, but exactly the right symptoms) in March/April (wasn't able to get a test back then). DB, who is one of those people who normally catches anything going, didn't have any symptoms at all.

I don't know what the current estimate of asymptomatic cases is - I'm sure I saw 80% at one point but that was a while ago. But there's certainly quite a lot of them, so that's one possible explanation.

There's also been suggestions that some people have some immunity from having have previous Coronavirus infections (so some types of cold) recently. So your family might fall into that category.

flissity · 31/08/2020 10:09

@Spiderseason very very!!! I have looked up antibody testing and Bupa do it. Nearest is about an hour and half from me. Dh is too busy with work really but I’m on maternity leave... so hmmm I am tempted to go get tested. It’s £65

Spiderseason · 31/08/2020 12:25

Oh no, I'm not forking out 65 for it, but in your case I might!

It would be handy to know, maybe I don't need to worry about winter as much.

I dread winter. Even if it's warm in October the illness seems to start immediately!

I've got our flu jabs booked!

Everything I've heard says that if you've had it mildly or without symptoms, you don't develop many antibodies.

Sunrise85 · 31/08/2020 17:12

Same happened to me and DH.

This was pre “lost smell and taste” being a symptom! Actually our Doctor friend laughed at us when we asked.

We had bubbly chests and no smell / taste. For about 4 days. No cough, no other symptoms and definitely no temperature.

Nobody would see us and testing wasn’t available. Our healthcare friends (nurses and doctors) said we were fine.

We self isolated regardless. We were really sleepy anyway... But whatever it was - we caught it from our 6 year old son who caught it from school.
