Have other supermarkets stopped limiting numbers in store like Morrisons has?

This week our local Morrisons has gone from limiting numbers in store by having a staff member or security person gauge who is coming in and out. With that they have also stopped the faster basket queue. It is now entirely back to normal now with loads of shoppers and no social distancing at all.

It was mega busy this afternoon. I know Saturday afternoons are busy and I fully expected to have to queue but I waltzed right in. I am quite relaxed about the virus in that i have been out to restaurants and met up with friends (all within guidelines) etc but i was a bit surprised at the number of people that were in the store. Is this the same for all supermarkets?

My local tesco is back to normal

dementedpixie · 29/08/2020 15:31

The only one I've seen that is different is aldi as it has the traffic light system. Most others just let you in now.

Apolloanddaphne · 29/08/2020 15:43

Fair enough. It was actually nice to just get in and get on with my shopping but I imagine it may be quite a shock for our large elderly population especially now the students are returning to double the population of the town!

Last weekend I saw people queuing to be allowed into an M&S foodstore.

Gingerfish91 · 29/08/2020 15:58

Our local supermarkets seem to be back to normal. In Iceland at least half the shoppers weren’t in masks either.

TabbyStar · 29/08/2020 15:58

Sainsbury's and Waitrose still have limited numbers where I am.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 29/08/2020 16:00

All of the ones local to us have been back to normal for probably more than a month now. No limiting of numbers.

Popcornriver · 29/08/2020 16:02

Our local supermarkets stopped this at least a month ago. No longer bothered personally as I imagine I'll catch the virus at some point once my children return to school. But yes it seems unfair on those still being cautious.

Jay670 · 29/08/2020 19:03

All ours are back to how they were. No one on the doors.

CheshireDing · 29/08/2020 19:27

Our Sainsbury’s and Co Op still limit numbers.

I have heard of other stores like a pp said where the customers are not wearing masks. Seems bizarre to me when some parts of the country still are.

I wonder if the mine mask wearing areas are at risk of local lockdown ?🤷‍♀️

CheshireDing · 29/08/2020 19:27

None, not ‘mine’

TimeForLunch · 29/08/2020 19:27

Same here. It's so much easier to be able to pop out to get something without having to factor in all that queue time.

katienana · 29/08/2020 19:30

Nobody was monitoring Tesco this afternoon and the one way system was gone. It was great last time I was there staff were shouting at people getting too close in the reduced section and I kept forgetting items and having to make a ridiculous circuit round the shop to get back to right aisle.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 29/08/2020 19:50

My local Asda’s back to normal now too.

Waspnest · 29/08/2020 19:52

A friend told me that her local ASDA doesn't even have a trolley cleaning place now. Our ALDI has got rid of the arrows on the floor - still has the traffic lights so I assume it has some counting detector thing as there's never staff on the door.

CKBJ · 29/08/2020 20:03

Sainsbury’s monitoring numbers but seem to have stopped sanitising trolleys- surely this should have continued even without Covid it’s a good idea. Side-stepping a bit but cashpoint machines were being sanitised but that seems to have stopped too. Again a good idea even without Covid.

CupoTeap · 29/08/2020 20:05

Sainsburys near me still counting in and out

Triangularbubble · 29/08/2020 20:43

Tesco here has removed all measures (except staff plastic screens and some sanitising) and returned to normal hours. I think it’s safer - it’s faster, it’s much less frustrating, almost everybody is in masks anyway, and while it might not be exactly two metres at all times generally people are giving each other space. The queuing and one way system just doubled the time in store and led to lots of people sniping at each other for supposed infractions. The priority hours stuff has been quietly dropped too. Asda, Sainsbury’s and M&S food all seem normal, the only shop I still notice limiting numbers is Hobbycraft.

There are plentiful delivery and click and collect slots here and some times in the week when the supermarket is virtually deserted so quite honestly if people want to be super cautious I think they should just use those.

LeSquigh · 29/08/2020 21:01

Sainsburys so not seem to be limiting numbers where I am but there was a man on the door of the M&S food hall today doing the numbers.

TheNighthawk · 29/08/2020 23:39

No controls at my local Sainsbury and they stopped sanitising trolleys ages ago. They just leave a bottle of spray sanitiser and some paper roll near the entrance for you to do your own. The sanitiser bottle is FILTHY and handled by all and sundry, of course.

Local M and S, someone on the door but very busy inside. They are still cleaning the trolleys. No social distancing whatever, anywhere. Masks have put a stop to that, I think.

Personally, I think wearing a mask is more dangerous for me than not as the consequent running nose and glasses misting and, worse, slipping off, (ear loops) means I have to touch my face and adjust it all the time. The lack of social distancing now, though, means it is also more risky to go without one.

FedUpofLockdown123 · 29/08/2020 23:51

The supermarkets where I am have been back to normal for ages now. In fact Morrisons was the last to go back to normal this week. Only different thing is one door for entry and another for exit which is a good idea anyway even without covid.

Multipack5678 · 30/08/2020 01:49

My local Tesco is pretty much back to normal. Only measures left are an "in" door and an "out" door and the checkout screens. And customers wearing masks, obviously.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 30/08/2020 06:26

Oir local Waitrose still has queueing, member of staff outside counting people in & out, hand sanitiser stations, and trolley cleaning. Feels safe still (we were shielding). Everyone wearing masks too.

Local Aldi also very good, cleaning stations, staff in masks, never crowded. However Asda was very busy when I needed to go in there a couple of weeks ago, mask-wearing was minimal, no hand sanitiser, no trolley cleaning. No queueing, pretty much back to normal.

Spanielmadness · 30/08/2020 06:38

Mainly back to normal, thank goodness! I would have certainly wet myself if I was unable to rush straight into Asda and use the toilet yesterday.
