From what I can understand....

if a child is symptomatic but has a negative test they will still need to isolate for 2 weeks?

Am I correct?

I wish there was a simple list rather than waffled on guidance!

No. If they are symptomatic and test negative then they dont have covid

Remmy123 · 29/08/2020 12:40

Errrrr if test is negative why the need to isolate for two weeks?

dementedpixie · 29/08/2020 12:41

if you’ve had contact with someone with covid and you test negative then you still have to isolate for 14 days due to the length of the incubation period

Remmy123 · 29/08/2020 12:41

Honestly I am rolling my eyes at what a stupid question that is

SparkleSW · 29/08/2020 12:43

Thank you dementedpixie - that must be where I got muddled.

Some schools have put this rule into their own risk assessments. Also siblings of negative testing child not allowed in school.
Apparently its to mitigate the risk of false positives. Did you read it in school documentation?

SparkleSW · 29/08/2020 12:53

Treesofwood

Yes I think I may have. I've read so much guidance recently and though I had read it somewhere but was unsure hence me posting.

17500 children where tested in Scotland last week. We are allowed back after the negative test. However due to widespread common colds and loads of children having a cough or high temp testing was difficult to book and some people had delays in the results so families were missing up to week of school and work.

Instead of rolling your eyes, why don't you post something constructive or scroll on by?

The fact is people do not know all the nuances of the ever changing guidelines.

The tests are not very accurate you can still have Covid with a negative test result

Letseatgrandma · 29/08/2020 13:04

It’s not a stupid question, OP-it’s confusing!

If you’ve been in contact with someone with a positive test, you go and have a test and if it’s negative, you still need to self isolate because you may still develop the virus.

If you have symptoms and have a negative test, you’re fine to go back to normal, providing your symptoms have gone.

I think Grin

False negs are common.

OP, they need to isolate until symptoms (part from cough) have gone.
