Am I the only teacher who is looking forward to going back next week?

I know there are risks and it is going to be weird but I am really looking forward to seeing my classes and colleagues again. I’ve also seen the impact that the disruption of education/life has had on them and am happy to be able to restore some normality/fun/distraction into what for most young people has been a pretty traumatic time. Feel like I’m alone in this. Am I?

Whinger*. That is what I typed. iPad changed it.

WyfOfBathe · 28/08/2020 01:33

I am too! I was in with keys worker kids last term, but I’m looking forward to teaching my subject in person this year.

I will be teaching my non-science subjects in science labs part of the time. They’re normally locked unless there’s a science teacher/tech present because of the gas taps, but they’ve had to change it this year so that each year group bubble can stay in one zone. I think I’m more worried about students playing with gas taps than Covid at the minute.

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 28/08/2020 01:58

Nope! Excited here too! I'm pregnant and obese so maybe I should be more worried, but I'm just really happy to go back to some routine and teaching actual lessons, rather than writing the same comments online x30. HR called this morning to inform me someone has an illness that's dangerous to pregnant women and I was genuinely worried they would make me stay off work!

Maybe I should spend less yoke one Mumsnet

@cantkeepawayforever

I am really looking forward to being back in school.

I am also concerned that the arrangements for return are not safe,.

It is entirely possible to BOTH be excited and happy about returning to the best bit of the job - teaching children - AND worried about the risk of increased COVID infections it brings. They're not mutually exclusive positions.

Yes it is important to remember life is not black and white
Didkdt · 28/08/2020 02:40

I'm really pleased to see those voices on here. The teachers at both my children's schools are so positive about returning the misery on here and in the red press is depressing and unrepresentative of what people I know in real life are seeing

psychomath · 28/08/2020 03:02

Hahaaaa I hadn't even considered the unexpected benefit of other subject teachers finally understanding our tap pain! GrinGrin

Seriously though, don't panic - we shut off the gas at the mains when it's not being used. It's the water taps you want to be worried about... Wink

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/08/2020 07:25

I'm excited. I can't wait to see my classes and colleagues again and teach 'normally'. I was in school with a small group of Y10 in June and it was great.

I'm looking forward to developing our faculty further, putting in place the exciting things we want to do.

Mostly though, the interaction with the children because that's what I have missed the most. I'm not meant to be at home, I'm meant to be in a classroom.

Our head is great and things will be as normal as they can be while keeping things as safe as possible. I know that no matter what chaos the government stirs up, all our focus will be on the children and the quality of teaching and learning which is exactly as it should be Smile

monkeytennis97 · 28/08/2020 07:29

Is anyone on here over 45 and looking forward to it?

I'm dreading it. Won't be able to talk to colleagues (support each other) in the usual way. Lessons are going to be hugely different to normal in my subject. Looking forward to seeing my ks 4 and 5 classes though...

Dragonsanddinosaurs · 28/08/2020 07:56

I'm so pleased to see there are teachers who are keen to get back and get on with it! I can see challenging times ahead trying to control classes full of DC who've had no school routine for 6 months but it is badly needed.

AuntieMarys · 28/08/2020 08:19

My dd is!

Hercwasonaroll · 28/08/2020 08:21

I'm excited and a a bit nervous of all the new measures. It's going to be different that's for sure.

Parker231 · 28/08/2020 08:25

I know lots of very excited children who are looking forward to school next week. Having had such a long break, they are keen to see their friends, teachers and have a near normal life again as possible. The few weeks in school at the end of last term were a big success so all good for the autumn term.

PotteringAlong · 28/08/2020 08:26

@Didkdt I’m massively positive in real life and to parents, doesn’t mean that I’m not slightly apprehensive about teaching 180 different pupils a day in a tiny portacabin with no masks when they’re all the size of adults.

As someone said upthread, it’s not a black and white scenario.

MarshaBradyo · 28/08/2020 08:27

Parents appreciate it, including me.

IncidentsandAccidents · 28/08/2020 09:03

Teachers, you do a wonderful job. So many children can't wait to see you again 💐

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 28/08/2020 09:07

Yep and some of us returned to the classroom in June to teach year 10 and 12.

palacegirl77 · 28/08/2020 09:19

Great to hear from positive teachers - so reassuring to any worried parents sending their children back next week. 6 months is such a long time away. It's great to hear there are teachers actively looking forward to it. Thank you!

MarshaBradyo · 28/08/2020 09:21

6 months is so long. Ds hasn’t stepped foot in his school all that time. I had to pick up his report last term and the mood was really positive which helped reassure.

FrippEnos · 28/08/2020 09:49

I can be actively looking forward to going back and concerned about the plans for doing so.

LadyCatStark · 28/08/2020 10:01

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind

I pity the poor kids if you are.
Yes it must be so awful for children to have a teacher who cares about them and is excited to see them 🤨

I can’t wait to be back either!

MaureenMLove · 28/08/2020 10:03

Can't wait!Grin. I was shielding for 131 days to be precise and then all of August with not a lot of social interaction, I'm desperate to get back!

I've already packed my school bag, bought a new lunch bag and new shoes!Grin. Somethings never change, regardless of your age!

It will be lovely to see students and colleagues and I hope we can make a success of a difficult situation.

year5teacher · 28/08/2020 10:05

Yeah I’m looking forward to it. I’d be gutted if we had to close again.

Yes - well over 45 here, and as I have already said, hugely looking forward to teaching again as well as nervous about the effect on the rate of Covid infections within the community. All of us were in from 1st June until the end of last term, so we have at least experienced the previous version of the guidance.
ineedaholidaynow · 28/08/2020 10:12

All the concerned teachers will be welcoming their pupils and will be happy to see them. But they are concerned that the time in school will be short lived due to bubbles bursting etc.
