Wish I wasn't a teacher because of Covid

In my family/friends circle, I am the only one who will be face to face with 150+ people per day with no PPE, no social distancing, nothing.

I have one relative who is not expecting to return to the office this year.
Another who now only works in the office two days per week, in a building where numbers are severely restricted, one way systems, spaced out desks etc.
Another friend who is also able to wfh for the foreseeable future.

I can't help but think that had I made a different career choice I would not now be faced with contracting a potentially life threatening virus and passing it on to my clinically extremely vulnerable husband or elderly parents.

I will go to work and try to ignore what's going on in the world and do my best. But I wish I could be made to feel safer - screens, masks, fewer pupils, something.

I hope I'm worrying for nothing, but it is getting difficult to sleep at night.

All catering staff I've seen were wearing masks. This is Scotland though so maybe a bit more sensible.

NebularNerd · 27/08/2020 22:59

@IfNotNow123

And I don't think a single " were all going to die" thread has been started on here by hospitality staff, nursery workers, food production workers, public transport workers or retail staff..not that I have seen anyway. And many if those people have been working throughout.
I've not said 'we're all going to die'.

I've said I want safety measures implemented in my workplace.

I also want safety measures implemented in all other work places, which in many, they have been.

@noblegiraffe

Nebular, if you’ve not met this particular poster before, you are playing pigeon chess.

They just want you to talk to them and will post whatever it takes to keep you responding.

C’mon giraffe it’s entirely possible that they genuinely lose their memory each and every time they name change. Wink

Yes I agree... and do I have decided to leave teaching!! New non teaching job starting in a month...and I cannot wait!!!

Cookiecrisps · 27/08/2020 22:59

@Stressing many teachers are parents of school aged children too so it’s a double whammy for them. I don’t think that teachers believe they’re the only ones who will be affected by Covid. I think people working in schools are concerned about schools driving the spread of the virus in the community. I am concerned about the students in my class taking it home to vulnerable family members since many of them live in multigenerational households.

IfNotNow123 · 27/08/2020 22:59

I'm thinking of maybe 6,7 restaurants run or worked in by people I know, all small independent places. No visors, no masks.

@NebularNerd

"
Why do you want me to go through the same?

What do I want?
Masks FOR ALL
Social distancing
Hygiene
Ventilation
Minimum."

But that's not all possible. Primary school aged children should not be made to wear masks because you are anxious.
SD will happen
Hygiene will happen; my dc school the regularly wash hands as do teachers
Ventilation - dc school have that

Piggywaspushed · 27/08/2020 23:01

I don't think it makes me sound thick. They do put klaxons out : I have seen them and they have recognisable lines of attack and agreed stock phrases. FWIW , I don't think the OP should have started this thread. It was only going to go one way because a section of MN lands themselves on it determined to undermine, demean and diminish. It's like a blood sport. What a way to treat someone who shows anxiety (whilst apparently being concerned about anxiety)

I am certainly not the one lacking emotional intelligence nor am I name calling.

I refer to secondary, as I've stated previously.

Secondary school aged children have been scientifically proven to transmit the virus the same as adults.

@IfNotNow123

You won't get an answer from them. They are different. They want special treatment

SirVixofVixHall · 27/08/2020 23:02

I agree with you OP. I am worried about the staff in my dc’s school. I am worried about my children too, as I know of a young student who is still pretty unwell quite a while after having covid, but as I am in my mid fifties, I think the biggest risk is to me, and I very much do not want my dc to lose a parent, or to have a parent whose health is damaged.
My dds have teachers my age, who will be spending all day in a packed classroom, with teenagers who have been having parties . We are in Wales and so don’t have masks in public, cases will rise now and neither teachers nor families are being protected.
I would happier with half time learning, smaller groups, windows open and masks.

noblegiraffe · 27/08/2020 23:02

Blimey Them 4 Us really put out the klaxon tonight.

Yep. I think some of these idiots don't realise that we can see their page and know that they do it.

They also don't realise that because they're too thick to come up with their own arguments, they are super easy to spot spouting the party line.

Mistressiggi · 27/08/2020 23:02

SD will not happen and only someone very, very thick or very, very goady would state that.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/08/2020 23:04

Do people realise that if teachers have to self isolate or are off sick (and I don't mean at death's door) schools are going to struggle to pay for supply teachers, and it won't be long before they have spent their budget and have to close for periods due to lack of teachers.

sweetkitty · 27/08/2020 23:04

I’m a SEN teacher I’ve been back in school 2 1/2 weeks no social distancing. No masks my children wouldn’t understand and they rely no much on facial expressions and building up a relationship with me. I’ve been sneezed upon, had them sat on my knee, play with my hair, hug me, high five me regularly. We wash hands a lot more and clean surfaces but that’s about it. It’s a risk I’m willing to take, my children need to be in school, their parents need them to be in school. I’m not a martyr I have 8 primary school children so pretty low risk. Compared to nurses, health care workers etc I have it very easy.

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 23:05

The risks are tiny even if you get the virus. Think of the children who need to be there.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/08/2020 23:07

The teachers have been thinking of the children who need to be there. Most will have been doing welfare checks over the summer term, I know of ones who have been doing welfare checks over the holidays too.

Piggywaspushed · 27/08/2020 23:07

No no no. The risks to my DH are not tiny. Please do not assume.

Or come at us with your think of the children.

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 23:10

@Piggywaspushed

No no no. The risks to my DH are not tiny. Please do not assume.

Hell, why would I suggest teachers think of the children? 🙄
Cookiecrisps · 27/08/2020 23:10

I think the media have perpetuated the myth of social distancing in schools and have been deliberately misleading in how they report this. The amount of back to school articles I’ve seen recently talking about English schools where teachers and pupils are wearing masks and there are 15 to a class spread out on separate tables or the teacher fully clad in PPE is doing temperature checks on pupils. It’s not going to be like this in September.

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 23:10

Here’s an indication of the actual risks

Wish I wasn't a teacher because of Covid
FrippEnos · 27/08/2020 23:11

@IfNotNow123

Blimey Them 4 Us really put out the klaxon tonight. Do you know what, that makes you sound really thick. Is that some Facebook nonsense? Do you seriously not understand that people who have experiences other than public sector have a different perspective, without needing to be part of some pressure group?
Wow.

I think that you protest too much.

NebularNerd · 27/08/2020 23:11

@WouldBeGood

The risks are tiny even if you get the virus. Think of the children who need to be there.
As stated previously, my husband has been shielding, so the risk to him is not minuscule, or to my elderly parents and in-laws.

Why is the risk to teachers continuously referred to as 'tiny' when the rest of the world is turned on its head to keep people safe???

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 27/08/2020 23:11

Because suggesting we don't think of the children is ridiculous.
