Wish I wasn't a teacher because of Covid

In my family/friends circle, I am the only one who will be face to face with 150+ people per day with no PPE, no social distancing, nothing.

I have one relative who is not expecting to return to the office this year.
Another who now only works in the office two days per week, in a building where numbers are severely restricted, one way systems, spaced out desks etc.
Another friend who is also able to wfh for the foreseeable future.

I can't help but think that had I made a different career choice I would not now be faced with contracting a potentially life threatening virus and passing it on to my clinically extremely vulnerable husband or elderly parents.

I will go to work and try to ignore what's going on in the world and do my best. But I wish I could be made to feel safer - screens, masks, fewer pupils, something.

I hope I'm worrying for nothing, but it is getting difficult to sleep at night.

@wherestheotherone you're talking rubbish and you're conflating your alleges experience with the national reality. I'm quite sickened by your comments, given my own and the general strength of feeling about the conditions NHS staff had to work in. That was eventually corrected. If you don't see why school staff shouldn't be safer in the work place then you lack the compassion for nursing. I wouldn't want my relatives nurses by you. Why don't you resign and make way for someone with a bit more humanity?

wheres did you miss the message from MNHQ?

Shitfuckoh · 31/08/2020 11:08

@wherestheotherone
So you think your DC has been badly let down by their school/teachers.. are these the same schools you'll be trusting your child to in September then?
If your school ends up having to close temp due to sickness / teachers isolating, will you be back on here screeching every other teacher needs to suck it up because your DC has been badly let down?
You do know that not all teachers were as poor with work as yours were?

ineedaholidaynow · 31/08/2020 11:11

If you think so little of your DC’s school and teachers, why are you sending your DC back there?

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2020 11:14

I’m not sure that teachers and nurses on Covid wards should be arguing against each other when both are probably in heightened emotional states and/or burned out.

SaltyAndFresh · 31/08/2020 11:15
@salty 😂😂 move on dear
Move on from a thread started so a poster could share her well-founded anxieties about returning to full, non-covid-safe schools? No.

It's sickening to think you work on a Covid ward. I'm sure you're not typical of the profession but you do it no favours with your stinking attitude.

CallmeAngelina · 31/08/2020 11:18

wheres, If your family members were sitting at home bored, then they were not doing their jobs properly. Please don't tar us all with the same brush because of their lack of professionalism (or, to give them the benefit of the doubt, because their employers gave them insufficient direction).

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 11:21

@wherestheotherone I do admire your bullish lack of empathy. You're really showing up the others, who seem to have given up! Lightweights.

‘ I hope you all enjoy your time back at your job, working and contributing to our society as it should be.’ ‘If you don't like it leave.’ ‘14 weeks paid holiday.’ ‘It's not exactly working a covid ward with rubbish ppe, 12 hour shifts for weeks on end, less pay and watching people die now is it! ‘, ‘It's a vocation.’ ‘The amount of hand wringing on here from teachers gives us all a bad name’, ‘perhaps you should consider being signed off work if you cannot rationalise the risks involved’, ‘What about the supermarket workers who have been in close contact/no PPE throughout the pandemic. The hospital workers who have been exposed? Bus drivers.’, ‘This virus needs to be lived with.’, ‘you either suck it up or don't go in’, ‘I'm not sure what else you want to happen’, ‘This is so out of proportion it's unreal’, ‘Are you scared of flu?’, ‘they don't put people on ventilators as much’, ‘Sick of this shit’, ‘This fear only seems to have gripped Mumsnet’, ‘This is not the bubonic plague’, ‘children have suffered the most throughout all this and if you (teachers) can't see that then maybe you should take up a different career’, ‘these teacher on here are wetting the bed every night about a tiny risk.’, ‘mental health in children has always been there’, ‘what other job would you feel safer in?’, ‘they just don't have the option to sit home on full pay,’, ‘It could be worse, we could be in Beirut or Colombia’, ‘ I'm sure you are not irreplaceable’, ‘Any comment from teachers about the restaurant workers working 7 days currently? ‘, ‘If you are that scared/anxious of the virus then please do resign’, ‘you're talking like you're the only people on earth who are at risk of COVID’, ‘Think of the children ‘,

CallmeAngelina · 31/08/2020 11:25

Jupp, and as if your Bingo list isn't bad enough as it stands, that's without the Auschwitz remark from one of our Basher friends (thankfully now deleted).
Keep it up!

HipTightOnions · 31/08/2020 11:25

Thank you MilesJupp - you are making all this a bit more bearable.

Shitfuckoh · 31/08/2020 11:27

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

Some of those comments are... Angry jesus, why would any teacher want to return to work if that's what some people think?!

CallmeAngelina · 31/08/2020 11:30

@Shitfuckoh, And then people accuse us of being touchy and defensive!
There are no words...

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 11:31

Shitfuckoh It's just possible that - for some posters - that is the point.

Pretty sure ours is the majority view irl 💪

ineedaholidaynow · 31/08/2020 11:33

I am just amazed some people are sending their children into your care when they think so little of you

Shitfuckoh · 31/08/2020 11:34

I saw the Auschwitz comment Sad which was bad enough but seeing that list like that... I'm kind of hoping they were just made by 1 (use your imagination here!) poster but I get the horrible feeling that it was more than 1 Angry

wherestheotherone · 31/08/2020 11:45

Yes I've seen MNHQ post. I fail to see the relevance.

As a collective you have power. Use it! Insist on face sheilds. Explain you are not able to focus on your role. Take your own into school and use it. Inform your unions. Instead of complaining do something constructive about it.

If it's causing you so much stress, don't go back. Your going to make yourselves ill with stress anyway.

What you feel will be picked up by your pupils and the last thing they need is increased anxiety on returning to class. I want my children to be taught by confident teachers who have a passion for seeing their pupils thrive.

The DfE and ofsted are aware and investigating the school after concerns reported from many sources merged. Some teaching staff have been suspended and the TRA, DBS have been informed.

To move children away from their peer group and what is familiar is also an impactful consideration. At such an unsettling time he has chosen to stay at his school, we have discussed it. I am employing tutors to get him through his GCSE education due to the current situation.

SaltyAndFresh · 31/08/2020 11:50

You can't expect confidence, given the situation we're in. It's a new angle though - tough love to instill the teachers with confidence.

Not being confident should not, however, be conflated with a lack of 'passion for seeing pupils thrive'. I think they'd thrive a lot more if measures were in place to allow schools to stay consistently open.

Imsosorryalan75 · 31/08/2020 11:52

@wherestheotherone Of course your narrow experience is representative of the whole of the UK's experiences. Hmm
It amazes me how narrow minded people are: this was my experience so it must be the same everywhere! Therefore, I dont support you.
Was it really that difficult to pick up the phone at the time and voice your concerns to..you know..the school you actually have a problem with? So typical of the parents who prefer to bitch behind your back rather than address the problem directly.

PumbaasCucumbas · 31/08/2020 11:54

The whole thing is just collectively sht isn’t it? Everyone’s had a sht time of it one way or another. I just wish we could all be kinder without making it a hard-done-by contest or resorting to saying nasty things to people who post in good faith sharing their anxieties and needing some support.

I hope all the negativity doesn’t spill into RL - wishing all the teachers and students have a good week back Flowers

Flaxmeadow · 31/08/2020 12:04

I really like the comments along the lines of ‘I’ve been treated really badly at work, so why shouldn’t teachers be?’. Very good point. You should fight to make sure they are not treated better than you. A hill to die on.

Wow talk about putting putting words in someone's mouth.

I assume you mean me. I didn't say I had been mistreated at work.

Back in March and April millions of people were infected with covid and using supermarkets. But they still went to work because they saw their work as vital. They just got on with it and we did not have dozens of retail staff threads. People are not bashing teachers, they are pointing out other workers for context. Pointing out that the risks are not as high. Any disagreement, no matter how polite is called teacher bashing

Now those numbers of people infected have been drastically reduced but we have dozens of upset teacher threads

I get teachers are scared, I'm not criticising them for that, if that's how they feel it's real to them and must be very upsetting. But i don't understand why when the infection is so much lower now?

To the poster who said there was social distancing in supermarkets, there has never been any social distancing. There were attempts at it but it just wasn't possible but people had to eat and so they had to shop.

Children need to be in school, some are are suffering because they are not in school. It's vital now that teachers return to work but so many comments on teacher threads seem irrational and they feed other irrational threads and round and round it goes

wherestheotherone · 31/08/2020 12:06

Another assumption! I did not allow it to continue. I did complain, how do you think the complains "merged" and regulatory bodies were brought in. And why would I know that unless I had been involved in someway? It's confidential information unless directly affected.

I didn't just complain and bitch online. I actually did something constructive about it! I aimed to improve the situation and informed those who had the power and could act on it. I fought for the education of my child.

Now there's an idea 🤔. There are enough of you on here unhappy, make some noise about it to the right people! Make a stand or accept the situation.

Of course a lot of teachers have passion for their jobs and are confident in their roles. The suggest I have the opinion of all teachers would be ridiculous considering I have tutors and others I entrust to help my children. It is not me who had bunched the profession together.

It's whether that passion and confidence is swallowed by the anxieties of the current situation. That will be different for all of you, it's a very personal judgement which will be informed by your own family situations.

What I'm saying is do something about it! Don't just moan as what is that teaching your pupils. Show them, teach them and act to improve your situation.

ineedaholidaynow · 31/08/2020 12:06

What do you mean there has been no social distancing in supermarkets @Flaxmeadow?

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 12:07

Amazing.

Instead of complaining do something constructive about it. ‘, ‘ I want my children to be taught by confident teachers who have a passion for seeing their pupils thrive.’ And yet here I am adding to the kicking).
‘I hope you all enjoy your time back at your job, working and contributing to our society as it should be.’ ‘If you don't like it leave.’ ‘14 weeks paid holiday.’ ‘It's not exactly working a covid ward with rubbish ppe, 12 hour shifts for weeks on end, less pay and watching people die now is it!

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 12:10

Keep 'em coming.

‘so many comments on teacher threads seem irrational (well that's true), 'just complain and bitch online’, ‘Make a stand or accept the situation. ‘
