Take kids to shop or back of the cupboard meals?

Since March DH or I have gone shopping alone while the other stays with the kids, but DH has had a sudden rush of work (self employed) and we've barely seen him for the last week or so, and now the cupboards looking bare.

Looking at what's in I can probably do tuna/pasta for lunch and bean/lentil chilli for tea. I've got carrot and cucumber so if I can come up with a dip, the kids would have veg sticks as a snack (about the only fresh food left), and I could possibly make flapjack for something tasty.

That would do today, then I could try to get to a 24 hour supermarket once DH is back and the kids are in bed. Or I could just take them out and get some bits in. Their 1 and 4, I could put the youngest in the sling so she wasn't touching anything, but the oldest is a nightmare in shops even pre covid. Which would you do?

What have you decided to do op?

ForeverBubblegum · 27/08/2020 11:57

I've told DS that we're going, he initially seemd ok with it, but has gone through every delay tactic in the book. As it's getting on for babies nap time anyway, I'm leaving it for now, and will try when she wakes up.

Ask yourself this question and then go to the sodding supermarket!

Could you do a click and collect and get your DH to pick it up on his way home? Or just send him the list and he does the shopping?

BluebirdHill · 27/08/2020 12:23

I would eat what you've got in. Can't your husband pick some shopping up on his way home?

I took mine even at the height of Covid.. didn’t have much choice really. Impossible to get a delivery & my OH was working. I had a 2 year old & newborn at the time. I put the 2 year old in the trolley (she refused the seat but would happily sit in the main shopping bit 🤷🏼‍♀️ and my newborn went in the baby seat thing.. I never felt unsafe really. Queuing was a pain the bum but there is no queuing now. I take my 3 year old to buy a piece of fruit after nursery 3 times a week now. We pass Tesco Express on the way home. She does touch other stuff but 🤷🏼‍♀️ She’s at nursery, she goes to multiple parks.. there’s risks she’ll catch it anywhere. The supermarket is probably the least likely place!

@Malteserdiet I think you missed the point the op was trying to make. I think op is more concerned about how her sen dc will behave/how they and she will cope in the supermarket

Malteserdiet · 27/08/2020 12:47

@LupinsNotLilys not sure I did. OP was talking about being worried about the kids touching and putting things in their mouths. Pre-Covid, whilst it might have crossed her mind, I’m not sure it would have made her think about not going to the shop with the kids if she needed to re-stock the cupboards?

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/08/2020 12:48

I would eat what you’ve got at home and go later on my own!

You have enough to get you through the day today so thats fine but if there's no opportunity for either you or DH to go food shopping tonight or early tomorrow morning you will have to bite the bullet and take them with you. Baby in the sling, older one sat in the trolley and a quick supermarket sweep. Perhaps go to a smaller shop like a tesco express so you arent in as long you can get most things in there. Shopping with young children is painful at the best of times hope it goes ok for you
